Guest guest
First, breathe. It will get better. There are alot of single moms out there that have gone through and are still going through what you are. Not only are we strong, but also know when we need a break and it is not a weakness. Is there a job you can do at a local school, preschool, church that has the same hours? I took a job many years ago at my daughter's school for the same reasons. How about going back to school? The government is still paying I believe (?) for higher education. Become a therapist or get certified in teaching or anything that will help you mentally. Try calling Broward Children's Center for respite care. At least you can get a few hours a week for your errands, or just to take a walk. Good luck and know that you are a good mom. Guest guest
Hi , I hear you loud and clear and feel I have and still do struggle with very similar issues. I have come to depend on recourses that are free, discounted, or that provide scholarships whenever possible. It has been a big help! With work, I am still working on ironing out kinks but this largely depends on your background/education and support. For example, I was able to find work per diem which has a lot of flexibility because of my degree. I can work one day a week and on the day my husband is off. He is willing to cover the kids for me (I have a 22 month yr old at home). So, having these elements has worked for me. However, it still limits me to just one day which does not provide much and has also limited me from developing my practice. This is where I am trying to get creative. Sometimes I just let go and try to trust that this might be where I need to be right now - even though it gets frustrating. Dealing with autism and all that goes along with it is extremely overwhelming at times. I don't know what your skillset is in terms of work. I work full time and it's a juggling act every day. All of my personal time and vacation time goes to doctor's appointments and therapy. I do not know where you live but I have a boy with autism in 3rd grade and a typical boy in 1st. If I can help you at all some weekends let me know. I live in Coral Springs. Jane Is it just me? Hi all I wanted your opinion on these 2 matters. Is it just me? Raising a child is hard enough. Guest guest
, I am not so sure that the kids needs afternoon therapy to show significant progress. Most kids with ASD on this globe go home after school to have down time. They do not get additional instruction. What prevents you from getting a job like the rest of us? I bet you most of your son's classmates (autism or not) are in aftercare, or I am wrong? Of course it would be nice to be a "stay at home" mom, but can afford that? Guest guest
Lizzie, I disagree with your statements about our kids not needing afternoon therapy and how "most kids with ASD go home after school to have down time." When I pick up my son from therapy after work during the week, the waiting room is packed with parents of ASD kids. Actually, I don't know very many kids who don't get some type of therapy after school. Many parents opt to spend their limited money on some type of therapy rather than supplements or testing or special foods, as in most cases there aren't enough funds to pay for all of the above. Guest guest
Ouch! That sounded kinda mean. If you read what she said, she's going to school two days a week. I assume that means she has to do homework assignments, etc. in addition to caring for her child and she also mentioned doctor's appointments. Get a job " like the rest of us " ??? Have you TRIED looking for a job these days? Much less when you are not freely available at the whim of an employer? And aftercare requires payment IN ADVANCE... so if you haven't even found the job yet, kinda hard to swing it. I do agree that a child may or may not need therapy, but that's for the professionals and THAT kid's parent to decide, no one else. Please think twice before you post something that is so judgmental. You may find yourself in her position sooner than you think since companies are laying off more and more people as well as going out of business altogether at an alarming rate.  ,  I am not so sure that the kids  needs afternoon therapy to show significant progress. Then when the insurance kicks in we have to WAIT for an evaluation, then WAIT for appointments to get approved, So, my son hasn't received therapy in 8 months.  Also, how am I suppose to find a job? I can only work when my son is in school. And I go to school 2 days a week. Yes I can work some weekends. Is it just me in this situation? Guest guest
Most kids with ASD on this globe go home after school to have down time. They do not get additional instruction.  What prevents you from getting a job like the rest of us? I bet you most of your son's classmates (autism or not) are in aftercare, or I am wrong? Of course it would be nice to be a " stay at home " mom, but can afford that?  Liz Subject: Is it just me?To: sList Date: Tuesday, January 26, 2010, 7:58 PM  Hi all  I wanted your opinion on these 2 matters. Is it just me? Raising a child is hard enough. Then you a Autism and health issues and that's a whole other ball game. My wonderful son is 7 years old and in first grade. Yes, he's improving day to day. He's still so far behind from other kids his age. I hate comparing him to kids his age because he is not like kids his age. On top of he fact I do not have anyone to pick him up from school, take him to doctors appointments etc I have issues with therapy. He'll have therapy but then his insurance says that we have reached the maximum benefits for the year and we have to pay out of pocket. I can not afford it. Guest guest
Lizzie, All kids on the spectrum might not need outside therapy after school but my son does. He needs the extra ot and pt because of who he is. In my opinion that is what is best for my son. I do appreciate those who do work full time with kids on the spectrum. I'm not looking to be a stay at home mother anymore. I like to keep busy & need to be able to support my son and myself. emily Is it just me? Guest guest
Lizzie, I also did mention in my email that my son also has health issues so I'm consistently going to doctors appointments. About me and getting a job. Its hard enough finding a job but finding a job when my son is in school & them being ok if I need this day or that day off is harder. Is it just me?
