That just does NOT make sense!!! 2 doors down? What is the purpose of that? Same building? Geez...can't you protest? These the same people who said you were not a good housekeeper? Look for moving help on Craigslist... ~*~Hugs~*~ ~*~Akiba~*~ -- update from me I've lived where I do for 8.5-9 years. Now, I have to move. But, it's being called a transfer. It seems the government gave a bunch of money to the housing authority. Apparently, they have to use it, or give it back. I will admit that some of the renovations are probably necessary; however, there is one thing that I just don't want and that's the mini-blinds. Our unit was given mini blinds several years ago; but, I didn't want them to be put up, so they still sit in the box they came in out in our storage unit. The unit that I move to will have the mini-blinds already up. I used to live in an apartment elsewhere in town that had mini-blinds and those things are so hard to clean and to keep clean. Honestly, I just don't want to use up my spare energy cleaning mini-blinds.My tentative move out date is April 24th. If I can get moved out of here and into the new unit, I'll get $100 credit. If it takes 7 days, I'll get $50. If it takes the full 14 days to move out, I won't get any credit. For every day after 14 days, that it takes to move, I'll get charged $15 for each day past the 14 days. We are going to be moving 2 doors down from where we live right now, so it's not far; but, I'm going to need extra help that I won't be able to get from my sons. Donna in WA

What a giant pain! Are they moving you to (I've lost the word I want)

" re-do " your old apartment?

I think I'd surely take down those blinds as soon as I was " in " , and put

them in storage. Blinds are a pain when you're energetic, nevermind us

Akiba, I did write 2 doors down, and technically, that's what it is. However the units on the street are mostly 2 and 3 bedroom units. There are a couple of 4 bedroom units which are stand alone houses. All of the rest of the units are duplexes. We live in one half of a duplex. But, all the 3 bedroom units are going to be upgraded. That's the term the director used. I told him that if the upgrade doesn't make things easier, then it's not really an upgrade. Believe me, I know from personal experience that mini blinds, even regular venetian blinds do not make things easier. At least not in a cleaning sense. I told the director that I didn't want to move. Unfortunately, if I don't follow through on this transfer, I will be in violation of my lease and my tenancy can be terminated.

So, I don't have a choice except to go along with it. The director also said that he would check the rules of community service to see if helping me move my count towards community service, then he would look to see if anybody needs community service hours. At first, when they got the government funds to do the renovations, they were

waiting until people move out in order to do the upgrades. But, the director

said that they have been getting calls almost weekly from Joe Biden's office

asking about the progress. So, now they are in a time crunch. If they wait,

then they will have to give back the unused portion of the federal monies.

My unit is one of the ones that hasn't been upgraded yet. That's why I have to

move. I'm still going to have to clean the windows, window sills, window

tracks, stove, door jambs and doors, Walls, Refrigerator, Closets and Shelves,

and Basic Cleaning. Oh Thank Goodness for small favors. I don't have to clean

everything that I would if I were going through a non-remodel move out.

If at all possible, my plan is to take the mini-blinds down and put them in

storage. I just hope that the drapery rods don't get taken down. Besides being

a pain to clean, mini blinds do nothing for the interior decor of a room.

Donna,

There really is an easy way to clean mini-blinds..

Fill your bathtub with hot water.. I've used Spic-N-Span liquid in the

water, but I'm reading that Cascade or some other type of dishwasher

detergent works a might bit better (and my mother swore by Cascade for

soaking her greasy dishtowels from the pizza shop.. made the little

suckers white again and took out the grease stains too.. lol).. Make

sure if you use powder type dishwasher detergent that you swish it

around (liquid too).. to dissolve it..

Then lower the fully opened blinds into the tub.. swish them up and down

in the water a couple of times.. then let them swim for an hour or two..

then drain the tub rinse the blinds with the shower.. stand them up on

their side to drain for an hour or two.. then take them out and hang them..

Very little physical exertion needed..

If the blinds are from the kitchen and are heavily soiled with that

greasy residue that you get from cooking.. might have to repeat the

procedure.. but all you really have invested is the tied up tub for a

few hours..

If they don't come as clean as you'd like.. I know that Mall-Mart sells

mini-blinds, or they did, for like $6 a set.. and if you watch for

sales.. even less.. or try a thrift store.. some people buy them and

then never use the suckers.. and off they go to Goodwill or a Thrift

Store..

And you can always take down the blinds and store them once you've moved

into the new place as well.. unless there's something in the lease that

states you HAVE to keep them up..

Hope this helps a little bit

the box they came in out in our storage unit. The unit that I move to will have

the mini-blinds already up. I used to live in an apartment elsewhere in town

that had mini-blinds and those things are so hard to clean and to keep clean.

Honestly, I just don't want to use up my spare energy cleaning mini-blinds.

into the new unit, I'll get $100 credit. If it takes 7 days, I'll get $50. If

it takes the full 14 days to move out, I won't get any credit. For every day

after 14 days, that it takes to move, I'll get charged $15 for each day past the

14 days.

Donna,

I understand what you are saying, which is exactly what I used to do at the

place where we used to live before moving here. The mini blinds were not easy

to clean and it didn't matter how many times I rinsed them. I had to take a

toothbrush to clean each individual slat to get both sides of the slats clean.

The professional blind cleaners use high pressure water to clean the blinds.

But, they charge an arm and a leg. Right now, my arms and legs aren't worth

much, so I'd probably have to auction off my first born child.

Seriously. I used to have mini blinds and I cleaned them in the tub exactly how

you described. But, when they were dry, they were still dirty. That's why I

ended up having to use a toothbrush. It's a real pain and even moreso now, with

my back and shoulders the way they are.

A long time ago, my parents bought regular venetian blinds. They didn't stay

long in the windows. My parents replaced all the blinds with window shades.

Way better than blinds and a lot easier to clean.

I used to have a client who lived in subsidized housing. All of her windows had

mini blinds. I wonder if this is standard anymore. But, she kept her blinds

open and pulled to the top of her windows. She put up window shades instead.

The shades were on tension rods and fit in the window frame. Where she ever

found them, I have no idea. But, the apartment manager let her put them up as

long as she didn't have to drill any holes.

One of the members of my fibro support group also lives on the street. She

suggested that I just pull the blinds to the top of the window and cover them

with plastic to keep the dust off. That is an option, I guess. But, I'd rather

not have them up anyway. Curtains are easy to wash and dry.

I do appreciate the time you took to write. But, from my personal experience

with cleaning mini blinds, it's not as easy as it sounds. It would be just one

more thing to get written up for during our annual inspection.

Donna,

I was reading about the high pressure hoses for cleaning blinds too..

that sounded like an awful lot of work too..

I think mini-blinds are pretty much standard most everywhere these

days.. Probably a cheap alternative to putting up curtain rods only to

replace them each time someone moves.. (they take the rods with them)..

or having people with NO window coverings of any type living in the

houses/apartments..

I guess I inherited my mother's predilection for window dressings.. she

had the venetian blinds.. then sheers.. then fancy curtains... Though, I

did shorten her dressing a little.. once I realized that it was the

kid's grubby fingers messing up my curtains.... the I made my window

dressing the mini-blinds & just valances for curtains.. the little

monsters couldn't reach THAT high.. LOL..

I think, that if the mini-blinds are required, that pulling them to the

top and then covering them with something.. would work..

Maybe find yourself some interestingly patterned material on the

remnants table.. and sew up stocking type fiction that would bunch up

nicely across the pulled up blinds to " dust " cover them.. a seam and a

hem and if nothing else you've got a conversation starter.. and a way to

cover the blinds that would be easy to clean..

HUGS
