Hello Dawn,

The much discussed 2008 autism/insurance Bill excludes " self insured " plans and

company plans with less than 50 employees as well as a few other exclusions.

The " federal " policy you mention is probably a " self insured " plan and is exempt

from State Regulation by Federal Law. The State has no control over such plans.

When the Legislature passed the Bill in 2008 they knew it would only cover about

14% of the autistic children in the State. Since then the insurance companies,

who had much to do with the drafting of the Bill, have found all available

loopholes to exclude most of the rest of the otherwise qualified children. They

have imposed high deductables or limited to " in network " and then provided only

a very small network or employed several other ways they have of not providing

coverage.

Monte s in the Office of insurance regulation at 850 413-2571 can be

helpful if you think you should be covered and are getting a runaround. He is

very familiar with this issue.

Today, the Senate blames the House and the House blames the Senate for the lame

Bill we are stuck with. I personally think it was written by the insurance

companies the way it was by design so they could do just that.
