Thanks Pierre - sorry I must have been tired - I meant immuglobin (I think) I'm

sure my GP would have known otherwise? I know IgA is an immuglobin, any ideas

what they can tell from blood work around that?

come close to filling both every time....the sad part is the nurse remembers

now and I don't have to ask for a second one anymore....**slinking back into

I don't know what just the word immunoglobin would mean in the context of

blood test. They can check for the levels of various immunoglobulins in the

blood, but it's not really that common, or particularly relevant when it

comes to IgAN. Yes, I would hope your GP knows what hemoglobin means!

I'll find out when I go to the hospital I guess, GP just went through the

results and held his hands up at a few of the test and said he had no idea what

they meant and why they were done!

The important thing, if they give you one of those collapsible urine jugs,

is to open it up fully before you pee in it :)

Hi Jill,

I don't come anywhere near filling one jug either. I wish I had an answer to

you about the night time urination, but the only things I know to suggest

would be not drinking too much water after dinner, and if you take a diuretic,

make sure you take it in the morning, not at night. Other than that, I don't

have any other suggestions.

Okay, I probably, maybe fill 1/4 of the jug and I drink water all

day long. Is that strange? I always feel like I don't go enough.

Another thing, I go only 3 times during the day but all thru the

night. How do you change your system so you don't have to wake up

so much in the middle of the night?

It depends on how big the jug is, I guess. Are there graduated lines on it?

If so, how much is a quarter? The nightime urination can partly be helped by

not drinking later in the day. However, when you have chronic renal

insufficiency, sometimes your kidneys are better able to remove fluid at

night while you're lying down, and the extra fluid flows back into the

abdominal area from the extremities where it has pooled during the day.

Having to pee at night is the result.

Jill I tend to have to get up roughly 5 hours after falling asleep and at

that time produce close to 1000ml of urine, or more. (fun thing since those

little hats they give you for collection in only hold 800ml...try stopping

yourself to empty the hat at 4a.m. when you still really have to go!) The

rest of the day I'm lucky if I produce 300ml at a shot. Like Pierre said

your body tends to filter things out better when laying down and hence the

night-time pee trips. I find if I restrict my fluid intake at night I tend

to still produce the same amount of urine after 5 hours BUT then I am

dehydrated on top of it. So I just have learned to put up with the late

night/early morning stumble to the bathroom.

I also found that for the first few months on the prednisone I was getting

up more often than I used to for bathroom trips. The longer I've been on

the pred the fewer late night trips I've had to make. So if you have

noticed an increase in your night time waking since starting the pred that

may just be your body getting used to the stuff.

*popping out of the shadows*

I find this conversation interesting. When I first started doing 24 hour

urines, soon after my biopsy in 1997, I needed two jugs because I filled the

first one plus extra. now when I do 24 hour urines, I don't even fill the

jug halfway, and I don't think that the amount of liquid I drink has

decreased much (its probably increased!). I haven't been able to figure out

why this is.
