Guest guest
why is he matched there? is this your home school? I would ask why they put him there..and what you are zoned for as home school... To: sList Sent: Tue, January 5, 2010 11:34:35 AMSubject: Elementary School - Fort Lauderdale Does anybody know anything about Elementary school in Fort Lauderdale? My son who has an IEP was "matched" to this school. I'll find out a bit more once I talk with the ESE Specialist at the school but was curous about their special education program/classrooms etc.Seems like a Title 1 school (low socio-economic population) but it looks as if the academics are pretty strong. Any info would be greatly apppreciated.
Guest guest
Nope, our home school is Bayview Elementary but they don't have a Pre-K program. We matched with as they're the closest Public School to our address that could accommodate his Special Classroom needs based on his current IEP. I also think I'm going to have to consider Private school options (The University School (Nova campus), Sagemont, American Academy etc.) as I'm just not sure I'm going to be happy with , although I need to reserve judgement till I see the program/classrooms and meet the Admin/teachers.... > > why is he matched there? is this your home school? I would ask why they put him there..and what you are zoned for as home school... > > > > > ________________________________ > > To: sList > Sent: Tue, January 5, 2010 11:34:35 AM > Subject: Elementary School - Fort Lauderdale > >  > Does anybody know anything about Elementary school in Fort Lauderdale? Guest guest
Hi Cheryl, We matched with as they're the closest Public School to our address that could accommodate his Special Classroom needs based on his current IEP. I don't really don't trust the statement that it is the nearest school that can accommodate your son. It may the school with the most vacancies. I'm not sure of the distance between the two schools but I would go the Broward website and see if there are any schools that are closer to your home school. Also, the school loves to talk in general and ambiguous terms. It's very much like their approach to the IEP. They refuse to discuss methodology or basically how the goals are going to be carried out. They'll do anything not to leave themselves open for criticism. They should be a lot more specific in their reasons for placement, especially if there are schools closer to you. They have to accommodate you and not the other way around. Guest guest
, Thanks for making that point. I actually pulled the distance/miles and it does seem is the closest to our Home school/address (4 minutes, 1.67 miles) :-( I'm really not feeling very optimistic that the school/placement is going to be a " match " for us in my eyes. 100% Agree, a match should certainly be about the school/services/classrooms and fulfilling the needs of the child and not about proximity to home school. I'm sure it's about filling up vacant seats and I know all too well that they don't always have the best interest of the child in mind when it comes to these things sadly. In NYC (where we are moving from) we have the same issues. Wonder if they are obligated to provide another alternative should I deem that placement unacceptable? Wonder how we handle at that point? > > > > why is he matched there? is this your home school? I would ask why they > put him there..and what you are zoned for as home school... > > > > > > > > > > ________________________________ > > From: Cheryl <cheryl.punk@> > > To: sList <mailto:sList%40yahoogroups.com> > > Sent: Tue, January 5, 2010 11:34:35 AM > > Subject: Elementary School - Fort Lauderdale > > > >  > > Does anybody know anything about Elementary school in Fort > Lauderdale? Guest guest
Can I ask regarding school zones, how does it work in Broward? It sounds like unlike where I live in FL, that you are required to attend your closest school that HAS the program your child's IEP calls for? So the parent cant choose from among various schools in their zone that have the p[program?? Here, the county is broken into 3 zones and kids with IEPs can chose from any number of schools IN your zone that have the program. Its not that way in Broward it seems, can someone pls explain this a bit to me? Thank you. From: Heifferon Sent: Friday, January 08, 2010 11:43 AM To: sList Subject: RE: Re: Elementary School - Fort Lauderdale Hi Cheryl, If is the closest school then you will probably have an uphill fight for something else. Florida maintains that even though the Team decides services, the school district determines placement. But if Bennet was too far, you would have a good argument for something closer. You really would have to be very specific in requesting something different. And that is the hard part. You could go and observe a class but keep in mind they will be on their best behavior.
