I'm worried about you too. That seems like a big jump in creatinine,

I hope they can come up with a way to get things under control for you

quickly. It's scary to be alone with a little one like that and be so out

of it from pain medications. I know I forgo taking anything for pain many

days due to the fact that I'm here alone with my two kids and there is no

one they could go to if something were to happen to me. My husband only

works 15 minutes away but with the nature of his job he can't just leave if

he needed to. The high BP headaches can be worse than migraines at times, I

feel for you.

Do you take calcium supplements at all? My neph started me on a 600 mg

tablet three times a day when I started on the prednisone since it will

leach calcium from your body.

Hang in there and you are in my thoughts,

Amy

Good point Jing.

I don't think getting calcium from milk when a person has that level of

renal insufficiency is a good idea! Since I was pre-dialysis and continuing

now on dialysis, my daily milk limit was 1/2 cup - just enough for tea and

coffee, and maybe a little bowl of cereal. It's the phosphorus. High levels

of phosphorus in the blood cause calcium to be sucked right out of the

bones, leading to severe bone disease. All dairy products are

severely-limited on a pre-dialysis and dialysis renal diet. And even then,

it's hard to keep phosphorus from being too high. At dialysis, on nights

when the neph comes by to see every patient after blood work, just about

every single patients gets told, " Your phosphorus is too high! " .

In the body, calcium and phosphorus regulation plus vitamin D all work

together. It's a complex metabolism, but in renal failure, it gets all

messed up.

Hi ,

Oh my, that is a very fast decline. Have you and your Neph talked about

when they may prepare you for dialysis? Take it easy kiddo, it sounds like

you have your hands full right now. Can you get any outside help? Let us

know if the additional medication helps your situation any. Have you been

into see him or are you just doing all of this through labs and over the

phone? If it were me, I would make an appointment to see him in person.

It doesn't sound like a bad idea to see him sooner than later.

Keep us in the loop on your condition.

Connie

They're taking me off the Prednisone

Last night at 9:30 my neph called, my labs are worse and my BP is out

of control. My creatinine is 4.4, my cholesterol is 280, and he says

my calcium is low, I don't know how, I drink a gallon of milk a day.

I started taking 2 prednisone instead of 4 today, and in 2 weeks I'll

cut down to 1. I can't get my BP below 120 and yesterday the doc was

going to check me in the hospital so we could control it but I was

home alone with my son and EVERYONE was working, had no ride or

sitter. So he called me in another BP script and I take one of them

3 times a day on top of still wearing my patch.

I am still fighting off a head cold. I have no fever but my head is

soooo stuffed-up on top of the high BP headache. My pain meds have

been changed from Vicodine to Darvacet and they KICK MY BUTT. I had

to take a half of one earlier cause I had my 7 month old nephew here

and it still knocked me out. I want a magic pill that will take away

the pain without the drugged up feeling, I also hate that hungover

feeling after I come out of it.

The begining of this year my creatinine was 2.4, at the rate I'm

going, I'm looking at dyalisis by Halloween. Gotta run.

Hi , I'm sorry to hear about that. I've had to take calcium

and vitamin D supplements to counter the effects of prednisone, but

sometimes I wonder if even that's enough: I've had terrible looking

fingernails since being on the pred.

Also frustrating is that my bp has shot up to 160/100 since being on

prednisone. My neph has lowered my pred dose to 30 mg from 40 as a

result. It's been a week, and I'm still waiting for it to come

down. Makes me scared I won't be able to control my bp at all.

I hope it works out for you, you must feel so frustrated!!!

Hi Sophia,

I hear you on the BP control fears. For us, the whole past year has been

about tweaking BP meds and weighing the effect of cyclosporin and prednisone

on BP. We've been lucky in that we've always been able to get it back under

control, although it does seem to take a lot of patience to get there!

Sophia,

It took them 4 months to get my b/p under control when I started on the

prednisone. They slowly increased my lisniopril, then started me on the

lisinopril twice a day rather than once, then added Cardizem LA to the mix

and that's what finally got it down and kept it down. They don't want it to

run high but in the same sentence they'll tell you your body needs time to

adjust to the new meds so they want to adjust in small, slow increments as

long as your b/p isn't WAY high. As Pierre has told me many times 160/100

is high but it's not high enough to warrant emergency tactics on a doctors

part.

My fingernails have been horrid since the start of the prednisone. My

cuticles also tend to pull away from my nails and dry out horridly. The one

thing I've found that helps my nails is just before bed use petroleum jelly

rubbed thickly all over my fingertips and nails, put on a pair of cotton

gloves (or in a pinch I use cotton socks), and sleep with them like that.

The gloves protect your sheets from getting petroleum jelly all over them

and it also traps heat around your hands so the stuff can sink in well. I

do it a few times a week and it has kept my fingers from cracking and my

nails from getting too brittle.

Thanks Cy, to me this is the biggest frustration, because you know

the bp WILL affect the kidneys. And taking all these meds makes it

hard to keep under control.

I miss the days when all I took was an ACE inhibitor and fish oil

pills.

Hi Amy,

I guess I've never seen my bp so high in my life, and so 160/100 is

scary to me....but probably it's still ok medically speaking. I

didn't realize it takes so long to get the bp under control, and I

certainly never thought about easing into the bp meds.

Hmm...petroleum jelly? I might go for that. I've been using some

multivitamin nail cream every morning, and it helps a lot. I find

that the edge of my fingernails sometimes will peel a bit still. I

also found my cuticles to pull away and get dry and crack too if I

don't use this cream. Actually I find my hands esp get dry, and I'm

moisturizing it daily.

The irony of all this is that I've come into my second teenager

years: I've got a bit of acne. oh yay. ; )

I was looking at my chest and sholders the other day and saw a little

bit of acne. Thought I was going backwards for a moment. My face

has been breaking out since this last flare up and I just blamed the

stress, but I think I'll blame the prednisone now.
