Guest guest
> Just because you > have a smoke detector doesn't mean you won't call the FD when you > have a fire. Wrong analogy. Just because you have a fire extinguisher, you might try to put it out with the extinguisher without calling the FD, or you might call the FD and use the extinguisher as a stopgap. Same with AED's, though I'd hope nobody ever " saved " someone then didn't think to call EMS... Mike

Guest guest
There are many documented cases where fires have started and occupants or employees of the structure delayed notifying the FD because they tried, for up to 20mins, to extinguish the fire themselves, with fire extinguishers This is not a question of " IF " , but " WHEN " . When people have these new fancy tools(occupant use stand pipes, fire extinguishers, AEDs etc.), they gain a false sense of security, that they can control the situation. I can just imagine the thoughts going through one's head. " Don't call the ambulance, we have the same thing they use, and it's already paid for. I ain't gonna pay for some ambulance to come out and do what I'm going to do here. " So yes, I agree with you on that there NEEDS to be training that accompanies AEDs, I don't think they should be OTC. It should be a requirement to have CPR/AED certification to purchase them. Red AED > Don't get me wrong i'm all for the AED's availble for anyone, as long > as we can tighten the reigns on the training NEEDED for them. Guest guest
So far, it's only one model from one manufacturer that has this approval for home use. They have to apply for each model separately. so it's Home model that is approved at this time. But, this really isn't a big deal probably. That prescription wasn't doing much in this case anyway. It's not less controlled now really. =Steve= bfd296 wrote: >Well I saw in the paper that the AED's are availble to anyone without >a prescription. Guest guest
I've had it happen, people refused transport because they didn't want the bill.....but then again there's always the ones who WANT transport because " they will get to see a DR faster " was just a thought. my biggest concern is the fact that it will delay notification of EMS....a situation where they call 911 after 5 or 6 shocks. Guest guest
Just about anyone without insurance worries about paying an ambulance bill. Not all ambulance services are through fire departments, no matter how much most fire departments would like to have it that way, and no ambulance trip is cheap if it's through a private company that isn't subsidized by a city or county. I am all for private ambulance services and feel that all EMS should be in the hands of private companies, however, I also realize that, until this country is covered by some kind of socialized medical insurance, people are going to delay calling for ambulances and are going to worry about how they are going to pay the bill.
