Jen,

I'm not a doctor, but I'm fairly certain it's the Risperdal, not the Metadate. The Metadate is for hyperactivity, not the Risperdal, which is probably for aggression.

My son had uncontrollable facial tics this last week. He has been on Metadate CD 30mg since last July. His last dose was Saturday. A doctor prescribed him Risperdal on Monday. I gave him .3cc on Tues & he was asleep for 3 1/2 hours. We may try again next week at a lower dose. He is seven.Has anyone experienced tics with Metadate CD? He has had some tics today also. I hope this will go away. We want to help him be less hyper but don't want these side effects.

My daughter had a vocal tic or a constant scream a few months back. The dr put her on risperdol which many told me did wonders for tics and hyperactivity. However my 5 year became manic and improved after stopping the drug. The tic ended with help from therapusts. Good luck America's Most WantedFlorida ProducerSent from my iPhone

Did you first see the tics last week? If he has been on metadate (Ive never heard of that) since july and just started tics now it may not be the med. My son has had all types of tics on and off for a few years now and I cant figure out why or if there is a why to be figured out. I know risperdal, which my son is on, is supposed to help tics. My son takes .5 of risperdal a day. very small dose. You may want to visit a forum which takes a holistic approach to tics, google "latitudes forum" and go to the tics/tourette's section. Does he have any other tics besides the facial ones? Is he on any new vitamins drugs or supplements? There are many theories from food sensitivities to chemical sensitivities to hormones and on and on regarding tics. Have you considered other things for hyperactivity such as L-theanine, GABA, or removing artificial colors and flavors from the diet?

I agree. Risperdal would be causing the tics....call your doctor.

Being sleepy the first few days on Risperdal, Zypexa very normal.

I am a doctor, and tics should be reported immediately. It is

probably the Risperdal, and may be a side effect called tardive

dyskinesia, which is a known side effect that may not go away, even if

the med is stopped. Some stomach meds and some antihistamines can

increase risk, but the antipsycotics are known for it.

Hi ,

I want to ask about the vocal tic. My son had what we thought was a vocal tic for years. Over the past summer, we were implementing the gluten free casein free diet and had started with casein. He was off of all dairy (casein) for about 3 weeks and all of his vocal "tics" went away. We didn't really even notice it until we gave him a yogurt and it all came back. He had several noises he made and would "play" with his phlegm. So, my question is, have you explored allergies first as the cause?

I ask because when we have kids with asd, they receive the diagnosis but no medical issues are ever explored and every behavior is chalked up to being "part of the autism." This is a terribly misguided belief when many, many of our kids have medical issues that when treated......omg, eliminate some of those "autistic" symptoms!

Sorry for my sarcasm, I just see this all too often and it gets frustrating after awhile....

Always rule out medical first....

My son is 6 and has been on Metadate for over a year now, he is 30mg and from time to time he will develop a tic or two. It is usually caused from a build up in his system and when that does happen we take a 2-3 day break and then start giving it to him again. He was also prescribed Risperdal and that was the worst thing we ever gave to him. I watched him on the matter of two days go from a somewhat happy child to an exceptionally depressed and frantic child. If you looked at him the wrong way he would burst into tears and just melt down. We continued it for 3 more days and I pulled the plug on that one. It was like torturing him and trapping him this dark world.... Now that was just our experience with it, but there is no way I could continue a medication that brings that about.

I was told years ago in a pharmacological review that Risperdal can be

used to treat tics, but can often cause it as a side effect. Once you

see tics from the Risperdal, you need to cut back the dose [talk to the

doctor!] because you don't want the tics, tardive dyskinesia, to become

permanent. We found Risperdal to be a very effective med for us, but

have to keep the dose low to avoid the side effects. Gets complicated!

Ok yes Ive hard of tardive dyskenisia. My son is on half the lowest dose and he has had tics on and off for years before we started risperdal, so Im assuming in our case it is not the med. Also I thought tardive dyskenisia took a while to onset after taking the med. Anyhow, thanks for the info. This has been the only med. out of about 10 that we tried that didn’t have bad effects for my son and appears to be helping him though its only been about 2 and a half months.

I was told years ago in a pharmacological review that Risperdal can be used to treat tics, but can often cause it as a side effect. Once you see tics from the Risperdal, you need to cut back the dose [talk to the doctor!] because you don't want the tics, tardive dyskinesia, to become permanent. We found Risperdal to be a very effective med for us, but have to keep the dose low to avoid the side effects.

Interested in this subject. Let me ask you what kind of build up in the system. If you know can you explain?JeannetteTo: sList Sent: Thu, February 25, 2010 11:03:06 AMSubject: Re: Metadate CD &

Risperdal

I ask because when we have kids with asd, they receive the diagnosis but no medical issues are ever explored and every behavior is chalked up to being "part of the autism." This is a terribly misguided belief when many, many of our kids have medical issues that when treated..... .omg, eliminate some of those "autistic" symptoms!

Sorry for my sarcasm, I just see this all too often and it gets frustrating after awhile....

Always rule out medical first....

My daughter had a vocal tic or a constant scream a few months back. The dr put her on risperdol which many told me did wonders for tics and hyperactivity. However my 5 year became manic and improved after stopping the drug. The tic ended with help from therapusts. Good luck

Risperdal can be used to treat tics, can also cause them. It is

usually dose related, but occasionally can happen with first dose, or

with low dose, or even after the dose is stopped. In fact, it can

continue tp get worse even though the meds are stopped. That is why

it is important to report all tics. Good suggestion about the milk

sensitivity. a tic is something that happens with no physiologic

reason for the behavior--speech when you are not trying to

communicate, motor movement that serves no purpose, throat clearing

when there is nothing to clear. But that means a careful search for

whether the throat clearing serves no purpose. Just casually looking

in the back of the throat may not be enough. You would see no sign of

sinus infection, and unless you think about what it could be, you

would miss it.
