Guest guest
Thanks. I'm not trying to " bash " but to reveal. If my opinion that their " awareness " does more to harm than help is not valid, I'm sorry... but I'm not alone in that opinion. I think a move to get ASA to have " walks " or something similar would be an excellent way to support our needs. Thanks for sharing this excellent article. I just posted it on my Facebook page. " Autism speaks " always seemed a little too " slick " even before these excesses and lack of real attention to the cause/needs of REAL autistic people came to light. Thankfully, they are now getting the scrutiny they deserve. -- Lydia Glider-Broward County Special Needs Parents Examinerwww.examiner.com<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 WE CAN DO THIShttp://www.nopom.info<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3Hear the REAL Voices of Autism:www.iamautism.org <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 " First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win. Guest guest
I used to support Autism Speaks in the beginning, and then I realized how little they contribute to community services for people with autism and their families. Families need day to day support, not so much research. Don't get me wrong, research is necessary, but now they've even stopped several of the projects due to the economic crisis... and yet, they still pay themselves substantial salaries.I'm sorry but that is very wrong in my book. I don't like how they portray autism either. > > > > Subject: Re: Should you support the upcoming Autism Speaks " Walk " events in South Florida and elsewhere > To: sList > Date: Thursday, February 11, 2010, 2:50 PM > > >  > > > > > I will support it and keep supporting it. Guest guest
" Recovered " refers to returning to a previous state of health. An autistic child will never return to that state. So the use of this word is incorrect. A cure means the same thing. Why not use the word improve or improving. It is really a state of mind. A child might stop stimming later in life but he will always want to stim. I can understand the need for special diets and how they might affect autism but they are not signs of autism nor a  part of the definition. Using such terms as " recovered " or " cured " only confuses the parent and gives them false hope that everything can return to the time when the child showed no signs of autism. It is referred to as wishful  thinking. From: sList [mailto:sList ] On Behalf Of evancostalas@... Guest guest
,Although I try to stay out of this very critical cause v. cure debate that seems to never end in the world of A.S.D. - it's been going on heavily since I started in it in the mid 90's - I tend to agree with your definitions. I do believe that as parents we must do what WE feel is right for our children. Some may choose a diet and some may state if a diet helps then it's a food allergy and not A.S.D. , now I don't quite agree with that. Some may tend to want to use Hbot if they can afford it, again another highly controversial treatment that does indeed 'treat' and I would be very careful with the word cure as I'm not nor am I Jim Carey.... so I don't have the clout to state such intense things as I'm dealing with multiple.. sometimes several dozen like today..... parents of children on the spectrum. I think that anything we can do to help our kids is a positive thing as long as we don't subject our children to what we wouldn't subject any other child to. My firm statement to my ex.. II's mom.. is " If it makes him cry and suffer to try to make us feel better, I'm not with it " ... seems to be a good way of thinking for me.. but like anything I'm sure there are those that disagree with me. One thing we do all agree on.. is our kids need all the help they can get. It starts at home and it starts at school... we can control home, trying to control school is a whole different story. After filing 4 due process pleadings and 8 motions today... I tend to believe that controlling things at home is a bit easier although it seems as if it's a huge job. Living in an adoption/emergency foster home for children with ASD has opened my eyes to alot.. attempting to get work done has been a chore at times.. but I find that when they are at school.. I get tons of work done.. much more then ever before. Then they come home and I find that my little nephew who is ASD among other things... with a severe sugar allergy... has been handed a huge bag of valentines day candy by a teacher that I myself told " DO NOT give him candy " it's also listed as a 'severe allergy' on his school intake forms and on his emergency med contact card.... If that didn't irritate me.. a half eaten cupcake with frosting loaded with sugar was in his pocket... she gave it to him. Guest guest
,Although I try to stay out of this very critical cause v. cure debate that seems to never end in the world of A.S.D. I had to go wish her a nice 3 day weekend of fun in person...although I don't think I was as pleasant as I could have been *smirk* !! E. , Sr. Nationwide Spec. Ed. Using such terms as "recovered" or "cured" only confuses the parent and gives them false hope that everything can return to the time when the child showed no signs of autism. It is referred to as wishful thinking. He has mostly RETURNED TO HIS PREVIOUS STATE....he has recovered... autism is not genetic... and I am not wishful thinking... ok????? I can take my son all places.. any new place and he adjusts very well. He travels and is typically well behaved .. all the time. he shaves himself with a razor and takes care of his own vitamins... he works around the house and does not flap.. bang his head or walk on his toes.. .he is 18 and we can be a family and do most things families do. Guest guest
It is entirely possible that there are multiple causes for the condition we call Autism, some environmental and some genetic. Two genetic causes have already been identified: Fragile X and Rett's Syndrome. It's not a black-and-white issue... there is a lot of " grey area " . Guest guest
I'm really not arguing the causes of autism. My best guess is it is a combination of genetic factors along with environmental factors. I think this is the most common explanation for explaining a psychoses. I have a friend whose daughter was diagnosed with a learning disability some 25 years ago. A result of the disability was her inability with sequencing and special. Simple geography was an impossible task. 25 years later she doesn't have to look at maps of the States but while driving she has a real problem with North, South, East and West. The child's psychologist back then told the parents that she would always be learning disabled and that it was a condition that just doesn't go away. This statement really doesn't reflect a specific behavior as it reflects a specific state of mind. Biomedical may do a lot of things but it doesn't cure autism. Nothing cures it. You also have to keep in mind that once you add more than one therapy, it then becomes impossible to determine which therapy is the result for any improvements. Schools might want to give themselves all the credit for a child's improvement but if that child has outside therapies it becomes a false claim and holds no water. So when you claim that biomedical is amazing with its results, I can only reply, " maybe " .    From: sList [mailto:sList ] On Behalf Of evancostalas@...
