Guest guest
Fight it. If you believe your kid should be in a room other than a cluster, make a case for it. The law says kids should be placed in the least restrictive environment, which is not the case with a cluster. Find an advocate who can help you out, the law is on your side. Request an independent educational evaluation if you believe the school's is biased (!). It's hard, hard work, but it pays off. They're not used to dealing with educated parents, you'll have that in your favor. Guest guest
I assume that if you are in Boca you are talking about Whispering Pines and Sandpiper Shores Elementy. Neither of these clusters were expanded per say. At the end of last year they cut a teacher from each school therfore the class sizes were 12+ because there were only 3 teachers in each school. After the 11 day count and parents complaints at both schools there was another cluster unit opened so that the class sizes would be smaller. I have heard nothing of expanding them any further. Both schools have children included in the classrooms and they are doing well. So I would say just fight to make sure you get what you want. Guest guest
Hi , thanks for your informatiuon on the parent to parent advocate sight. What is the name of this site on yahoo. I would like to join. Are you an advocate? What do you think of these clusters for kids with ADHD/PDD who have alot of language? I don;t think that putting them in a cluster with kids who have moderate to severe autism, many who do not speak more than one word at a time, is appropriate. I only heard of several shadows that were provided to children at Pal, Beach and they were kids with serious medical issues besides just autism. Thanks for your help. Guest guest
Hi , The real problem is not understanding the system but the system understanding you. To place children in a class that have similar disabilities is a restrictive environment but it becomes even more restrictive when you mismatch those disabilities. Their idea of least restrictive is to have you pass a typical child in the hallway or join their typical equivalents for lunch but segregated. The thought of it makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time. To answer your question about AHDD/PHH, it sounds like a mismatch and who does it benefit? I don't think they should mix severe autistic children with moderate autistic children. The cluster tends to teach the same material to a group who have different needs. The need for shadows with autistic children is obvious. Most have social deficits and they are perhaps more severe as you go up the spectrum. This social problem means they don't participate in a groups setting. The teacher or aide has to constantly redirect their attention. If an Aide can do this and handle any other miscellaneous behaviors, then your child should be in general ed. I think Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) goes beyond a specific section of the IDEA. As your child gets older differences become more of a problem. The regular school population belittle these kids because of their differences. If children are constantly placed in clusters how is the typical population going to be more understanding? In other words, LRE in some respects is more important for the typical child than it is for the disabled child. When it comes to awareness forget the adult. You can reason with adults. Awareness should be directed to the adult's children. Serious medical problems in themselves along with autism have directly nothing to do with getting a shadow. The word is " need " . By law the school has to set goals that meet the child's individual needs. If a child can be placed in a gen ed class with assistance, that is where he belongs. And while he is in the class he doesn't necessarily have to function in all areas. In other words, if your child has fine motor skills issues and it is a real task for him to write , this doesn't preclude him from the class. As I previously said, the system doesn't understand you. In any case it is an uphill fight. I hope I answered you questions.  From: sList [mailto:sList ] On Behalf Of Sent: Sunday, February 21, 2010 4:16 AM To: sList Subject: RE: Palm Beach is placing everyone is clusters for Kindergarten Hi , thanks for your informatiuon on the parent to parent advocate sight. Guest guest
It's always important to check the teacher's background to be sure that he/she is properly trained to teach your child. This can be done with a simple written request. No child Left Behind and IDEA have strict requirements on teacher qualifications in regards to Sp Ed kids in the least restrictive environment. Children do not have to be placed in a self contained ESE class to receive appropriate support, accommodations or specialized instruction by a properly trained teacher. In fact, IDEA states the opposite.Subject: RE: Palm Beach is placing everyone is clusters for KindergartenTo: sList Date: Friday, February 19, 2010, 8:23 PM Fight it! Children do not have to be placed in a self contained ESE class to receive appropriate support, accommodations or specialized instruction by a properly trained teacher.
