Guest guest Posted January 10, 2011 Report Share Posted January 10, 2011 I received very exciting news this morning, that some of my work which was entered into a regional competition won the Award of Excellence. There is a banquet in March where I will receive a framed paper award and then my work is also entered into an international competition. I am relatively new to this field of work and this is a huge pat on the back for me. I called nada this morning to tell her the news. I heard things like, " Oh for God sake " , " I'll be darned " , " A banquet? Is that all you get? No monetary award? " " Well that's good, I guess " . She couldn't say congratulations if her life depended on it. But I considered the source beforehand and called only because I needed to tell somebody the news. My life has ceased to depend upon gaining her approval! I could have won an academy award and I'd have gotten nothing but this sort of response from her. She painted me black when I was 5 years old.
