Guest guest
A good friend of ours who lives in Broward County sought services for her adult daughter from VR - the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. After some preliminaries, including some testing, Mom was told that her daughter was not "ready" for supported employment (e.g. assistance finding a job, job coaching, etc) but that she would need to spend some time in a Work Adjustment Program or maybe it was called Work Adjustment Training. In any event, the VR counselor directed her to contact the Hab Center in Lake Worth. The goal (presumably) is to prepare her daughter to work in the Community. Of course, her recent years in school was supposed to do that and now ?? My friend feels confident that her daughter could work in the Community WITH support with a job coach. But she hasn't ruled out this other route, if it will actually lead to employment. So, on her behalf, I am asking: has anyone had their adult child assigned to a Work Adjustment Program? Where? and has it worked out, has it led to employment in the Community? Is a Work Adjustment Program the new terminology for ADT ......... Adult Day Training programs which was the new terminology for Sheltered Workshops? Just trying to help this mom get some info. Any perspective or information would be appreciated. Thanks. Guest guest
Thanks so much. Passing this Gulfstream lead on to my friend this afternoon. If that is not workable, maybe Gulfstream folks can provide other leads. As to why she was referred to LakeWorth Hab Center .......... VR contracts with the LakeWorth Hab Center. If the daughter goes there it is free. The Mom called the Hab Center on Boca Rio Road and the JARC also in Boca (more manageable a trip) and was told they do not contract with VR re: their on-site ADT programs so Mom would have to not only transport both ways she would have to pay close to $600 per month in "tuition" for something she really doesn't want for her daughter, anyway. The Hab Center on Boca Rio does accept medwaiver but since the daughter is stuck on the wait list (over 18,000 now not receiving any services whatsoever) she is eligible but unfunded. My friend does not have the money to pay privately. She also called ARC of Broward ......... again, medwaiver or private pay. Very discouraging as the daughter is having high level of anxiety now that she is out of school for over 8 months and has no regular meaningful day activity. Mom does lots of social things and family things with her daughter, but there are too many hours of not enough to do and this is causing great stress and anxiety for everyone in the household. Oh, she also called 211 (Broward?) and they basically told her to work with VR. Spinning in circles. Lucille,I am wondering why they want to send her to L.W. if she lives in Broward. I assume they mean ADT training. A friend of mine in Broward says the VR services are severely lacking there. She finally gave up and found a job for her son and job coached him. I know they have the following in Broward. Goodwil Commercial Blve., Ft. Laud. has this type of program. They also have a Miamilocation where you can schedule a tour of the apparel manufacturing, the assembly plant, document destruction center, etc. http://www.goodwillsouthflorida.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=contactus.mainGoodwill Industries of South Florida2104 Commercial Blvd.Ft. Lauderdale, Florida 33309Phone: A friend in Wilton Manors has had her daughter in this program for 3 years. She is quite severe in her disability and transportation is provided. She works onthe sewing of the aprons that the people at Publix wear. Guest guest
Not ready for employment is not appropriate as an assessment outcome. I recommend that your friend contact VR central office supported employment supervisor and ask about how she can assist with her daughter receiving a Discovery Vocational Profile - alternate assessment.
