Guest guest
Hi Colleen, I used to work in a group home with adults with MR and Autism. One elderly patient had Oral Dysphagia and I had to prepare and puree his food. Everything had to be pureed or he would choke. We had an appliance that was for pureeing only (it's been 8 years since I worked there, but I'm sure you can find one online or at a Wal- Mart/Target). It was an amazing machine and made all food really smooth with no lumps (I wish I could remember the name, sorry!) I used to add applesauce to a lot of his food to make it soft and easy to swallow. It's amazing how applesauce tastes good with a lot of food, even meat (Yes, I would taste it to make sure). I would also add extra Au Jus, gravy and sauces. Hope this helps some, feel free to email me! I'm surprised you have not found anything online, did you try google? Guest guest
Collen, Is it definitely dysphagia? Has he had all the testing done? A baby who has dysphagia cannot drink from a bottle without difficulty, but a baby with oral sensory can and then choke on any textured foods. I have included some links here. The first two are general info links and the third is how to tell the difference between the two. Be sure you have people involved who know what they are doing on this. Hope this helps. CAROLG A general article http://www.asha.org/public/speech/swallowing/Swallowing-Disorders-in- Children.htm A what it is article http://www.lpch.org/DiseaseHealthInfo/HealthLibrary/digest/dysphagi.html An article to differentiate between dysphagia and oral sensory http://www.massgeneral.org/pcs/heal_lang_art2.htm > > I know it is off topic, but my son Connor (Hanger Band), now 11 months, > is having feeding issues and was recently diagnosed with oral > dysphagia. Guest guest
Carol, Thank you so much! Yes, Connor has been diagnosed with oral dysphagia by a feeding team at Children's. The next step is to consider a barium swallow. Were waiting to see if it's absolutely necessary. Your articles were very helpful to me. Thank you, Colleen son Connor - Hanger Band > > Collen, > Is it definitely dysphagia? Has he had all the testing done? Guest guest
Colleen, Is he aspirating or not that severe? I hope not. Most of my reading says they do get better with age most times. Dominick has oral defensiveness and is a real pain, but slowly over time he is getting a little better. He is 16 months old and still on formula, because we cannot take it away until we can replace all the calories with real food. He eats a ton of stage two foods, but has problems with the mixed textures also. We have done lots of desensitizing therapy and exercise to help him learn to coordinate his mouth. It has actually been easier to teach him to take small amounts of solids then to eat a mixed textire food. Our OT said that he may have to kind of skip that transition stage from mixed to solid, so that is what we tried. We used alot of the Gerber stuff....the fruit puffs because they dissolve in the mouth are great. Even if they hold it in there it very quickly gets soft and mushy so he can swallow it, you know. We are making progress, slowly, but progress. Check out Dom's website, it talks about his feeding issues right from birth. www.mybandedbaby.typepad.com Feel free to email me anytime, we can share info and tips.
