Guest guest
Hi , I'm glad you called your Doctor when you recognized the low calcium symptoms. It's scary. My understanding is that the parathyroids are quite resiliant, so I wouldn't count them out just yet. Many make it fine with one left of the four after surgery! It's not uncommon for them to go through a period of shock after surgery. Hopefully, your surgeon plans to check your serum Calcium, ionized Calcium, and Pth levels regularly to see if they'll kick in. Mine did after a couple of months. Fingers crossed for you. Guest guest
Hi ! When I had my TT in January 2001, my surgeon removed a parathyroid (with benign tumor) and also - " ran a rampage " through my neck. I had a severe calcium crash after surgery, had to stay in the hospital a full week after surgery, with hypocalcemic " events " the following 3 days after surgery. Scary, aren't they? My full sympathy is with you! I went home on Rocaltrol and OSCal (my surgeon feels it is the best one out there). I had some twinges, and tingling, ended up in the ER one time for a calcium check as my parathyroids came back on line. My surgeon had said they might never come back - might take up to a year. I just wanted you to know that I am off both meds - and my calcium level, and my PTH level is fine. Hopefully your parathyroids will come back over the course of time. be well! ~Sus Dx Hashimoto's, benign node parathyroid tumor suspected 12/00 removal of parathyroid tumor and TT Jan '01 Dx Papillary CA in both lobes of thyroid LID 4/01 to 6/01 clean scan 6/01 no RAI raised lymph nodes found on yearly exam positive ultrasound for lymph nodes bilaterally positive tg LID 9/3/02 tracer 9/23/02 body scan 9/26/02 RAI131 9/30/02 repeat ultrasound 10/02 > Well I have been getting tingling, twinges and most recently some > muscle spasms. Guest guest
Hi Sus, How do I know when and if it is bad enough that I should go to a ER? Everytime I get these tingling feelings I run for the Tums right now. Is there a chance that I could OD on the calcium? Is more better than not enough...ahhh! Guest guest
Hi again : i'm not Sus and i know she will answer and i am interested in her report also, as my parathyroids " shut down " (Dr. descrition) following my TT and i was on calcium supplement. I was told it my face became numb to get to the ER. Sus may have more to add as i think mine was not quite as serious as hers and yours. Keep the faith... Guest guest
Me again - I don't think you can OD on the calcium, but I am not a doctor. You could certainly take too much, but I don't think that would be applicable in your case (hypocalcemia). Ask the surgeon - I think mine said take 3 oscal and see if the symptoms fade. Then take 3 more if they don't. I am not sure anymore - cytomel instead of my levoxyl is leaving me feeling rather soggy brained. ~S > > > Well I have been getting tingling, twinges and most recently some > > > muscle spasms.
