Guest guest
Thank you for your reply & explanation Arne. I think I confused the ultrasound with the endoscopy, I could have sworn there were ultrasound-like photos made from the procedure, but it was so long ago (only 3 years, but it seems more like 10). If I understand you correctly then the two procedures are really one in the same only the ERCP goes further and can be used to treat as well as diagnosis where as a simply endoscopy is only used in order to get a clear view of the stomach and esophagus (something which is now being slowly replaced by Given Imaging's camera capsule), correct? "The purpose of an upper endoscopyis to visualize the condition of the esophagus and stomach. This istypically how you find varices (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please). An ERCP actually goes through the stomach and "out the other side" toprovide access to the common bile duct. This procedure uses an endoscope with an ultrasound emitter at the end of it to get internal ultrasound pictures of the gut. In this porcedure you would see ultrasound like images. I don't believe it is used much in patients with PSC, at least I have never had it done. in Seattle UC 1991, PSC 2001
