Guest guest
Hi Amy. Have you had blood work done since your RAI? You might already being going hypo. The weight gain, if you're working out, is probably because of that. Jody will probably chime in about the eyes. That's one of the scariest parts about this disease, to me. If you're not scheduled to see your endo soon, you might want to make an appointment and tell him or her about your weight gain. HypO is and inevitable result of RAI, as I'm sure your doctor told you. He should be starting you on replacement hormone soon. My mother says you gain weight looking at a glass of water when you're hypo! Another thing, when you were hyper, you lost muscle mass. That just makes you even more likely to gain weight. If you're healthy enough and you get the OK from your doctor, you might try some resistance training to get your muscle mass back up. For every pound of muscle you gain, you burn 30 to 40 more calories. So, if you gain 10 lbs. of muscle, which is easy to do, you'll burn 400 more calories just by breathing! Welcome to the group! Holly New to list Hello, I am 28 years old and was diagnosed with Graves Disease in November. At the same time I found out that I was pregnant. Unfortunately, I miscarried at 6 weeks. Because of my pregnancy I was on PTU. However, a few weeks after I miscarried I had an allergic reaction and my doctor took me off. In January I had the radioactive iodine treatment. My doctor has also put me on a beta blocker. Since the RAI and the beta blocker I have had bouts of feeling better and then worse. I have also begun to have problems with my eyes. No bulging, but double vision and some strain. So, now I am hanging out waiting to see if the RAI worked so we can get pregnant again. I know I don't have to tell you all, but this whole thing has been just a big pain in the rear. I keep forgetting to ask my doctor this, but do any of you know the outcomes of the first RAI treatment? How likely is it that people need a second or more? I have gained about 15 pounds and am trying to get it off again. Before I became hyper I was really happy with my weight. I have started running again and have found that it helps my hyper bouts, but hasn't done a thing for my weight. In fact, I continue to gain. That is a little frustrating. I look forward to participating in the group. Amy

Guest guest
Hi Holly, I saw my doctor a week ago and we did blood then. My numbers are going down, so yes I am sure that I am becoming hypo. We also talked about the weight gain. I expect that at my next visit we will talk about replacement hormone. The whole eye thing is really scary. Bright light is painful for me. I wear sunglasses even when it is raining right now. I work at a computer and finally changed the brightness level. It made a big difference for me. Resistance training is a good idea. I just joined ediets.com today. My husband and I did cyberdiet.com a few years ago (back when it was free) and he lost 40 pounds and I Iost 25. So, I decided to do what worked for me before. I know it will probably be more difficult to lose weight this time (last time it was a breeze!), but I need to find a way to cut some calories and add that to my running. Guest guest
Hi Amy- Doctors recommend waiting at least 6 months to 1 year after RAI before attempting pregnancy (mine recommended 1 year when I had it at 24). After the 1st 2 or 3 months things usually settle down and patients usually start stabilizing. There is a lady on this list that was recommended another round of RAI within the 1st 6 months (I think) after the 1st RAI treatment but she ended up refusing and went hypo without that 2nd round. Having to have another round of RAI isn't that common. Hang in there. After RAI, more thyroid hormone is released as cells die which makes you even more hyper initially. This should settle down for you soon. Take care, > Hello, > > I am 28 years old and was diagnosed with Graves Disease in November. At the same time I found out that I was pregnant. Guest guest
Dear Amy Welcome to the group. Hope all goes well for you in your recovery. I don't know enough about RAI to give much advice (others here are a wealth of information). I'm so sorry about your miscarriage. Not a good time for you with the GD and all. But I hope it gets better for you (it has for me - I had 2 miscarriages prior to diagnosis and then thyroid surgery. Now I have a beautiful 7 month old and another on way).
