On a not entirely unrelated note I am planning on making the following device: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~zhuxj/astro/html/spectrometer.html Amongst other things you can detect whether a light source contains mercury. Believe it or not all you need is an empty cereal box and an old junk cd. For the cd anything by Celine Dion should do. .
