Guest guest
Hi Liz, Does the Area Behavioral Specialist know anything about ABA? From: sList [mailto:sList ] On Behalf Of Lizzie Sent: Monday, April 26, 2010 2:59 AM To: sList Subject: ABA?????????? Hi, Behavior analysis consists of 3 major branches: Behaviorism is the philosophy of the science of behavior, basic research is the province of the experimental analysis of behavior, and developing a technology for improving behavior is the concern of ABA (, Heron, Heward). The BCBA board is an international body that certifies those who want to offer the services. The training and certification targets areas such as selecting, defining and measuring target behaviors, evaluating and analyzing behavior change, reinforcement, punishment, antecedents, developing new behaviors, funtional analysis, ethics and so on. I am reading this straight from the ABA text book used at colleges that provide approved ABA training/certification. So, ABA can be used to help people, young and old, with or without disabilities, change their behavior. ABA can " improve socially significant behavior " , says the book. Many psychologists and educator have contributed to this science, such as Skinner (operant behavior, reinforcement) and (a stimulus triggers a response) . The main principles of ABA are used in every classroom every day all around the world. The principles of reinforcement, for examples, are used by parents all day long. In a clinical setting, ABA is used is a specific and systematic way, but the main idea is the same: Changing behavior. In Broward, the STAR curriculum which is used for students learning pre-academic skills, utilizes ABA strategies and techniques. It is, however, very limited, and cluster teachers say they need more instruction. Hopefully, autism coaches and teachers will be able to be certified ( BCBA) so more students can learn through this method of teaching. This is something our Area Behavior Specialists could be helping the cluster staff with. It should not be impossible to do. Let's keep pushing this issue. After all, ABA has proven to be very successful with our population and they spend a lot of their time at school. Liz

Guest guest
, this is the best question I have seen so far. The Area Behavior Specialists most definetely are well versed in ABA. However, the Broward cluster model has just now, 2 or 3 years ago, started introducing ABA in the classrooms through the STAR program. Not all cluster students use the STAR, because STAR is primarily concerned with pre-academic skills. You can check who is certified on line by going to the ABA web page (BCBA) and look under Services. Find out first what area you are in, the call Broward ESE and ask who are your Area Beh Specialists, who serves your school as a Program Specialist (for the autism cluster), and who is your ESE coordinator. Get their phone numbers and call them or e-mail them. Ask them what they do, how often they visit your kid's school and what their certification is. This is public knowledge and you should know who these people are. There is a group of people in Weston who are trying to make ABA with discrete trail instruction mandatory in the cluster. Let's support them. The Area behaviorists can train the coaches and the teachers in ABA. It is possible, and the teachers I know are very receptive of this. Until then, parents and others need to keep asking the county to make it mandatory.E-mail your county ESE coordinator and program specialist. Hi,Behavior analysis consists of 3 major branches: Behaviorism is the philosophy of the science of behavior, basic research is the province of the experimental analysis of behavior, and developing a technology for improving behavior is the concern of ABA (, Heron, Heward). I am reading this straight from the ABA text book used at colleges that provide approved ABA training/certificat ion. So, ABA can be used to help people, young and old, with or without disabilities, change their behavior. ABA can "improve socially significant behavior ", says the book. Liz
