Schools, Camps, and Residences

Magic on the Hill. A spotlight on a camp in Wayne County, Pennsylvania for children with verbal or non-verbal learning disorders, A.D.D./A.D.H.D., Asperger's syndrome, Tourette syndrome, and/or mild mood disorders. The Young Men of Marram Place. Making life good for three young men who require 24/7 support with their social, communication, and daily living skills is the main goal of Marram Place. This article is the short version of how 6 involved parents put together an independent housing plan for their adult sons with autism and the lessons they learned that may be of use to other families.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side. Camp Twin Lakes is not-for-profit organization in Rutledge, Georgia that serves kids with special needs and has a wonderful new wheelchair-accessible treehouse that is both a play area and an educational classroom for learning about nature, the environment, and sustainability.

Families are the Key to Innovative Housing Solutions. Families and individuals with developmental disabilities are leading the way in establishing innovative housing options. They are creating homes with supportive services more tailored to specific individual needs. They are developing homes with physical environments that feel more like home, or are more therapeutic. And they are taking steps toward true community integration.

In a Perfect World. Today there are many schooling options for parents who have children with special needs including public school, homeschooling, private day school programs, and residential school and care. As every child's needs are unique, families must carefully decide what is the best environment for their child to learn and grow to their full potential.

Music, the Arts, and DisabilitiesMusic For All. A spotlight on teens with disabilities who performed in the recent Bands of America Grand National Championship Finals. This is an inspirational story of kids who took advantage of their abilities (and the teachers and parents who encouraged them) to excel in music.

The Transformative Power of Piano Improvisation. A description of the ways in which duet piano improvisation is uniquely enhancing the lives of women with a variety of disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, and blindness.

Using Art to Advocate and Empower Parents: This Exit, No Return. In the play This Exit, No Return, each parent expresses individually their initial reactions to discovering that their child will grow up differently. They voice their fears, hopes, and dreams as they describe for an audience the frustrations and riches of their lives. The piece is intended to be used by groups to bring awareness to the general public and to teachers and other school personnel of the perception that children with disabilities are unique and whole individuals.
