Guest guest
My husbands cousins wife jsut had a baby on June 5th. she had preeclampsia, and had to have an emergency c-section on June 5th, she was due July 5th. He was really tiny and not gaining weight at first, so they had her give him formule in the hospital. he had to be 5 lbs before he could go home. they had her pump milk but he was not gaining weight on her mik(so I hear) so she just gave up on breastfeeding, becasue the nurses told her to give him Formula so he can gain faster. Well then he had a life threatening event after he went home from the hospital His mom was changing his diaper in the middle of the night and she noticed he was really hot, so she took his temp it was 103 degrees, so she took him to the hospital within a short time he stopped breasthing, and his hear quit beating, they revivied him. he has a problem with his uretha, it is not shped right, so some urine goes back into his kidneys and he got a major infection, he has to ahve surgery ina about a month. well I am going to see them for the first time on thursday, and I ahve heard that she was real dissapointed about not breastfeeding, but in a way it works to bottle feed becasue they can take turns getting up with him in th middle of the night. I am thinking about asking her if she would be interested in trying to breastfeed him still, and helping get the info she needs to do it. Does anyone have any helpful info they can share with me? how can she go about it if she is interested? any advise would be helpful. thanks a lot, Beckie ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Guest guest
Beckie, If she wants to resume bfing she'll need a hospital-grade double-electric pump to stimulate her supply, a lactation consultant/LLL contact to work with for questions, and a ton of patience. Her son will have to be taught how to suckle at the breast. So the transition would be switch from formula to bm in the bottle, spend time with baby at the breast (not nursing) to get used to the smell, express milk on breast nipple and encourage baby to get (the now familiar) bm from the breast instead of the bottle, wean from bottles as baby learns to suck at the breast. Finally she'll have to put the pacifiers away completely and get her son to satisfy his sucking needs at her breast instead (until he becomes a good nurser). Your husband's cousin's wife might also like the idea that bm is considered a clear liquid and she could nurse her son up until they take him to surgery and right away (again) after he comes out of surgery because of this status. Hope this helps you out. Amy Lynn
