i recently have been told that i have rosacea. at the dr's office i

was given a very limited choice as to treatment...a two month stint

of very strong antibiotics:(. this doesn't seem like a cure but a

temp. fix which in my opinion will only lead to stronger antibiotics.

my question to you is there anyone on this list using alternative

methods???? any help would greatly help. i'm greatly opposed to

taking the antibiotics for many reasons....thanks again, michelle

Hi,

We have a list of cleansers, moisturizers, topicals, and other

assorted items which people use to control their rosacea. Here's the

url for it -- http://rosacea.ii.net/toc.html

It sounds like your derm gave you standard treatment for rosacea --

oral antibiotics. (The other part of the treatment is a topical

antibiotic - usually Metrogel, Metrolotion, and Metrocream -- or

Noritate. You didn't mention if the doc gave you this too.) I was

given standard treatment when I was newly diagnosed too. I was given

oral tetracyline and erythromycin. Neither of those worked so I was

given a really strong oral antibiotic called Bactrim. That seemed to

work, and I took it for about three months. I haven't taken any

antibiotics since and that was about 7 years ago.

However, I was new to the whole understanding of what could trigger

rosacea flares. I didn't know what they were at the time so I kept

doing them. (Mine are getting overheated and eating foods with a high

content of histamine in them.) I wonder if I would have needed the

antibiotics if I had pinpointed my triggers first? It's hard to say.

I've heard it said it's best to clear your face with the oral pills

first and then you're better prepared to discover your triggers once

you clear up and stop taking them.

It does take time to discover your triggers and discover what

cleansing/moisturizing routines don't irritate and actually soothe

your skin. You might try to do that first and use antibiotics as a

last resort if it's too difficult. At least you have the highlight

information at your disposal to try. I've found that I've gotten my

rosacea about 90% under control avoiding my triggers, taking specific

supplements and using facial products that help my skin.

Good luck!
