Guest guest
I don't necessarily disagree with some of the comments made about Autism Speaks or the whole McCarthy debate. However what I find alarming is how much WE in the autism community are not as united as we should be. I suppose a lot of it has to do with our own frustruations with our kids not being helped the way they should be, coupled with the fact that the autism rates continue to increase but yet no true, solid insight as to what really causes autism has not been provided. And I just don't see what good services will be available to our kids when they grow up and we are no longer around. So what's the difference between us and say the breast cancer awareness movement? Come October every year we see pink stuff everywhere you can buy that donates proceeds to research. They haven't found a cause or cure yet either and I'm sure some patients choose a more untraditional bio medical approach then chemo, but they respect their fight and cause and are united and do a great job with their awareness programs. Why can't we do that? April is suppose to be autism awareness month, where do you see the awareness outside our community? I just think its sad that we spend so much time bashing Autism Speaks or or Dr. Wakefield or whatever and little time becoming truly united in this very serious epidemic that is affecting our kids.Just my 2 cents for whatever its worth....APSent on the Sprint® Now Network from my BlackBerry®From: evancostalas@...Date: Thu, 11 Feb 2010 16:08:31 -0500To: <sList >Subject: Re: Should you support the upcoming Autism Speaks "Walk"events in South Florida and elsewhere I say.. autism speaks not for me... they are totally motivated to prove a genetic connection and unwilling to fund independent studies... of course.. their salaries would be in jeopardy if they did that! Guest guest
I agree that we are all entitled to support any organization we believe in but without the bashing and hating. As for the recovery of children it has been proven that some children do recover. If we haven't met a child who has been recovered, who are we to say it isn't true? Lia is right we shouldn't mislead others. I support ASA, G.R, A.S in their efforts to spread the word on autism (even though sometimes they can be out of place.) Long before Autism Speaks linked with NAAR, the Walk Far for NAAR was and still is an amazing opportunity for the autism community to gather and support each other. The parents who started in their basement the NAAR organization from scratch, being a pioneer in the autism community, and funding autism research long before autism was in the public eye, wanted nothing more than to move research ahead. There will never be." Perfect" organization, there will always be something someone won't agree with, but we can focus on the positives. Autism Speaks has many to answer ton and as we all know, we may all be linked by the diagnosis of autism, but there are many different views and ideals. Guest guest
Don't you all think that we would be more effective and less easily swept under the carpet if all parents of all children with disabilities banned together...all the separate groups in to one loud noise? If all the monies were one pie cut into slices of disabilities rather that salaries....if we could get the exposure and help for services and education as we do for special olympics....what a force to be reckoned with we would be! How did it ever come that it was divided. Pretty much we are all in the same pot...aren't we? The one on the back burner?
