From Autism to Full Recovery withThe Son-Rise Program Remarkable New Video Documenting Autism Recovery for Autism Awareness Month Hello Ana!For Autism Awareness month, the Autism Treatment Center of Americaâ„¢ announces the release of an inspiring six minute “before and after†video documenting the recovery of Simon, one of many children who made a full recovery from Autism using The Son-Rise Program. Simon tells his story from his Autism diagnosis to his hopes today as a gregarious 19 year-old college freshmen. "We're thrilled to be able to share this video with you. Like many of the children who have benefitted from The Son-Rise Program and like my son Raun, Simon is an excellent example of a Son-Rise child exceeding any expectation that his doctors had for him and eventually even being off the autism spectrum." Barry (Bears) Neil Kaufman. Simon's story is a testament - Never give up hope...Never set limits on any child's future just because they are diagnosed with Autism. As Simon's video story shows, this belief enabled his parents to choose an alternative to institutionalization that enabled Simon to leave his Autism behind to become a communicative, social young man. The sky is the limit for Simon.Simon's mother attributes her son's recovery from Autism to The Son-Rise Program. "Simon was diagnosed by doctors who told me he had a less than 30 I.Q., would NEVER speak or recognize me again, and he would be severely autistic. Today, Simon is an authentic, loving, introspective person...truly a young Son-Rise Program child growing into his future. Years ago, I was told by a Son-Rise teacher that because Simon grew up with The Son-Rise Program principles, they would guide him throughout his life. Like many of the children he had worked with, he predicted that Simon would grow up to lead an extraordinary life. We believed in that possibility for Simon, and he has already fulfilled that vision. My husband and I hope that by sharing this very personal video with the world during Autism Awareness Month, that other families will hear Simon's words and find their way to The Son-Rise Program as well." She is in mainstream kindergarten. Her academics are solid and she has a best friend, Olivia. Thank you for what you created." - & Steve B., Missouri “Do what they’re doingand love them!†Interview with Kate Wilde For years, Kate Wilde has been repeating the phrase, “Do what they’re doing and love them.†Can you imagine that a random choice at her local video store in England would impact her life forever? She and her twin sister were 13 when they watched Son-Rise: A Miracle of Love video. “It never left my mind. I was struck by the attitude of acceptance…you can overcome anything.†Fueled with inspiration from that point on, Kate focused her life’s purpose on loving and teaching children with developmental challenges. She began volunteering, became a certified Son Rise teacher in 1997, and now directs The Son Rise Program®.Kate shared an experience she had at the age of 15 when she worked with her first child with Autism in England: “She wore special wedged shoes to accommodate walking on her toes, and a helmet to protect her head from her constant head banging. She towered over me! She would grab me in a headlock and drag me around the border of the soccer field. I thought…What do I do? I remembered The Son-Rise movie…Do what they’re doing and love them…so that’s what I did. She didn’t bang her head with me. It was an invaluable first success!†In her early twenties, Kate began working for Pinney, whose book on working one-on-one with children helped fuel her interest in Autism. After four days, Kate was offered the opportunity to work with Ceilidh, a child with Autism. Ceilidh’s family asked Kate to join them for training at the Autism Treatment Center of America (ATCA), located in Massachusetts. To her surprise, during orientation at ATCA, they played Son-Rise: A Miracle of Love. “I was shocked and knew it was a sign. I was using the very same Son-Rise Program that had inspired me to work with children as a 13 year old.†Kate returned to London to work and save money to return to America for the Living the Dream program (now called Grand Summer Sequence) at The Option Institute.Thinking she’d stay in America for a short time, Kate began the Living the Dream course…and never left! With strong ties to her family, Kate was torn, but knew it was important to stay in America and continue her dream to work with ATCA. She had developed a bond with a group of individuals who played a significant role in her personal and professional growth at ATCA - Spellman, Bryn Hogan, Hogan, Suzanne Pruss, and Raun Kaufman. “We were the Son-Rise gang. We’re the same generation…we grew up together. Who I live close to is important to me. What I do is important.†As always, her real love lay in working one-on-one with children and she could never imagine doing anything else. [eyes tearing] “During my certification, Bears told me he had a vision that one day I’d be training other people for certification. I thought he was crazy, but here I am with this new passion for training Child Facilitators and Teachers.â€As Director of The Son-Rise Program Intensive, Certified Son-Rise Program Teacher, Teacher Trainer, and Child Facilitator at the Autism Treatment Center of America, Kate directs The Son Rise program, runs training programs, teaches groups of parents, works one-on-one with families and children, regularly posts her thoughts and activities to The Son Rise blog, and travels to the UK to train parents and staff there. She’s made an incredible difference in the life of each family and individual she touches. We’re blessed to have her and we’re excited for her! Your story of Raun is in some ways like ours with our son, Matheo. My name is Lucy and I am married to a wonderful man named Bogdan. Together we were fortunate to have two amazing little boys. Our first little guy, Victor, who is now 3 is a very social, fun-loving and talkative boy. Our baby, Matheo, is 21 months old and is also fun-loving but non-verbal and not social. We began our journey just couple of months ago. We felt something just didn't feel right. I voiced my concern to our pediatrician. Her response,"Wait and see. Have him seen at two years old. He might just be a late bloomer."Not satisfied, I went home and searched the Internet for terms like "non verbal, flapping of hands, spinning and teeth grinding"...and there it was...Autism. I didn't want to believe it! We took him to a psychiatrist and after one hour of observing him, she said, "I cannot make a diagnoses just yet [because at the time he was 18 months] and acted like a 12 month old. If I had to guess I would put him on the spectrum." She pretty much gave us no hope at all!We were so heartbroken. I felt like this could not be happening...how did this happened??? The next couple of days were the most difficult. We cried, felt hopeless and alone. What surprised me the most is how my husband looked at the situation. He told me something that I just did not understand, "You should be happy this is happening to us and not to so and so. This is happening to us because we can handle it." I stood there with tears in my eyes and kept asking myself, "how can I be happy this is happening to us?"I searched and searched [the Internet] for a way to help our boy...and there it was...ABA. ABA came up in every search we did on Autism, so we found this private clinic that offered it. The woman explained that they work on eye contact among other positive things.Matheo started ABA in January. At the same time we decided to take Matheo off regular milk and replace his milk with rice milk. Within two days his eye contact improved. Although Matheo started ABA, I still felt that there was something else out there for him. I requested to be a part of one of his sessions and when I came home I looked at my husband and said to him, "It feels as if they are training him...as if he's a dog. We felt so sad that we had put him in this program. I felt guilty for spending my parent's money on ABA. (I asked my parents to help out because it was so expensive.) We're happy it only took us two and one half months to realize that ABA was not for us.After seeing a RDI consultant, she observed Matheo and said something interesting, "Oh look at him. He is like the Son-Rise kid. He spins everything just like the Son-Rise kid. There's a movie done about him." That night, I found the movie on YouTube. After watching, I felt this feeling of hope and it all seemed to make sense. We went on your site and watched testimonial after testimonial and felt this relief.I signed up for The Son-Rise Program Start-Up in June. I'm so excited and happy to start! It's remarkable! We feel that Matheo senses that we're acccepting of him. He's so much more attentive and he makes more eye contact. I now understand what my husband once told me about being happy that is happened to us.It all makes sense to me now! I want to thank you for that. I feel that we can help our son. You and your wife have a lot to do with that!In hopes of meeting you one day,Lucy T. ———Back to top——— The Son-Rise ProgramGames, Themes and Activities Watch and Practice Kate Wilde's New Game Check out Kate Wilde’s latest Son-Rise tip! My husband and I hope that by sharing this very personal video with the world during Autism Awareness Month, that other families will hear Simon's words and find their way to The Son-Rise Program as well."
