Guest guest
Is there any reason that I can not bf after having a c-section? I mean with the epidural and all? My DH mentioned something about it last night, and I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with this? I plan on asking my OB on my next appointment, Tuesday morning. Thanks again, Diane
Guest guest
Diane, Welcome to the list. I have had c-sections with both my boys and haven't had any trouble nursing. With Ryker (12-21-99) everything was scheduled. I even had notes for the nursery that no sugar water or pacifiers were to be given. I had my c-section early that morning and then was able to nurse him that afternoon. I didn't get to nurse Austin (5-2-96) for a few days because it was an emergency c-section. He had to be in an incubator to dry out his lungs and then I had a reaction to the drugs (it isvery painful to vomit after a c-section!). My advice is to have a discussion with your OB/GYN and make it very clear that this is what you want to do. HTH. Amy W.
Guest guest
Diane, There is no reason why you can't breastfeed after having a c-section. My first son was born by c-sec, and he was at my breast within half an hour or so. My husband held him while the doctors were finishing up with me, and as soon as we were in the recovery room, I had him at my breast. Generally, as soon as you are out of the operating room, you can feed your baby. If there are complications, you may have to wait, but this was my experience, and the policy at my hospital is to have the babies at mom's breast ASAP after delivery. Are you sure you are having an epidural for your c-section and not a spinal? It won't make any difference in terms of breastfeeding, but around here (Boston) a spinal is considered the anesthesia of choice for c-sections. Just wondering. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I did a lot of research of breastfeeding after a c-sec. and am happy to help in any way. Guest guest
Diane, Breastfeeding is completely possible after a c-section. Sometimes it may take a little more effort, with a sleepy baby, but often times it happens very naturally and easily.
