Standardized Tests: How Parents Can Help

Now, more than ever, students must be equipped with the essential skills needed for school success, as well as for achievement on standardized tests. However, many students find test taking to be frustrating. While they may have mastered the content areas found on most standardized tests (reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies), they fear failure because they don't know what kinds of questions or format to expect.

What if parents could introduce their students to both the format and the content they will encounter on standardized tests? What if parents could guide their children on strategies and techniques for answering different types of questions? The Spectrum series makes this possible. Developed by experts in education, each title in the workbook series offers grade-appropriate instruction and reinforcement for learning success. Specific features include:

Confidence-building practice in reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies;

Skill lessons with test-taking clues and sample questions to help students become familiar with test formats and content;

Preliminary sample tests with guided instructions, followed by comprehensive practice tests;

Answer sheets that simulate the actual testing experience

In addition to the Spectrum workbook series, parents can help their children prepare for standardized tests in other ways. For example, you and your child can determine the exact content of your state's standardized tests by contacting your child's teacher, the district office, or the state department of education. You can also find out if your child qualifies for special test-taking accommodations. Children who have been identified with learning disabilities may be able to take the test under special conditions. For instance, children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) are often allowed to take standardized tests in areas free from distractions.

Since most standardized tests are timed, parents can remind students of simple strategies, such as skipping questions they don't know and returning to them later. Parents should also remind students to read the directions completely and ask for clarification if they have questions. And, if they finish early, encourage them to go back through the test to make sure they have answered all the questions.

Other ways to help children prepare for standardized tests are to ensure they are well rested, well fed, and mentally prepared. They may feel anxious, but there are techniques to ease their anxiety. Take a brisk walk together the night before the test, draw a hot bath before bedtime, and remind them that these kinds of tests are just part of the educational routine. You can help minimize the stress by explaining that you took them when you were in school and that their children will do the same. It's just a part of growing up.
