Guest guest
Hello Kirsten! I meant to post to you earlier. I am very excited to hear about another option for our area! I would love to hear about your experience at The Brace Shop. It has been quite a long time, but I remember hearing from another group member that Children's in Cinci would only send severe cases, only babies under a year, too, for helmet referral... I think I also understood it to be a local helmet, and actually no one had been there yet. Obviously the group is thrilled to get an update on this info. Thank you so much for posting about this new option. I checked Hanger's website, and there were several " The Brace Shop " s in and around the Cincinnati area. Would you mind sharing which location you are going to? I would really like to add their info to the Helmet/Band Database. There is also a place in the database entry for individual group members to add their email address for contact by any future plagio parents who want to learn about a particular facility or option... would you consider adding your email in the future once The Brace Shop entry is complete? Also, any information about how Children's approaches helmet referral would be a plus. Do they indeed refer children over a year if the situation warrants? Did they seem amenable to referring moderate cases as well? I know the Hanger band is FDA approved for use up to 18 months of age. Also, best of luck on your baby's fitting on the 15th! Please let us know how everything goes. Take care, Christie (Mom to Repo'd Remy) > > > > Our local orthotic helmet provider uses a chin strap. Guest guest
My experience with the plastics group at Children's has been excellent so far. I was referred to them by my pediatrician's office. Laurel's appointment was with Dr. Gordon. He took one look at her and said that she was definitely a candidate for the helmet. She has pretty severe flattening on the right side of the back of her head and her forehead is beginning to bulge out on her right side somewhat. Also, one of her ears is almost an inch further forward than the other. Sorry, I don't know the exact measurements. She is six months old, so I'm not sure what their policies are regarding children over one year. The plastic surgeon we saw is also working on his own helmet that will probably be available in the summer sometime. He said his will be a " ski boot " type of helmet. Apparently, they will be able to insert the foam right onto the baby's head to ensure a custom fit without a separate casting? Again, not sure of the details there...just some more information I received. The Brace Shop that we are using is the Clifton (Wellington Place) location. The only two locations that do the cranial bands are Clifton and Township. In retrospect, I wish I had chosen to go to Township. I picked Clifton because I work downtown and it's only about 10-15 minutes from my office and Laurel's daycare. I don't have any issues with the personnel at the Clifton office, it's just the atmosphere around there. The building it's in is an old gothic building right across the street from the Planned Parenthood where the abortion protesters are always stationed. Our orthotist's name is Greg, his last name slips my mind at the moment. The scanning went pretty well...Laurel was unthrilled when they slipped the little sock thing on her head, so I'm relieved that we didn't have to go through the plaster casting process. She would've had total meltdown. It only took about 45 minutes, from the time we arrived to when we were leaving. So now I'm just trying to prepare myself mentally for the challenges ahead. I'm hoping Laurel gets accustomed to the helmet easily and that she'll be fine with it. In the meantime, I've been occupying myself with retail therapy (new stroller, new diaper bag) and creating a flyer to put on her bulletin board at daycare to explain what the helmet is for. (Thanks to all the excellent examples on the boards here, I think I have all the info I need!) If you have any other questions I can answer, please feel free to let me know. Guest guest
Kirsten, Thank you so much for the detailed info. I've added all the new info to the Helmet/Band Database in the Database section of the group. I look forward to hearing your impressions as Laurel progresses through her treatment. The plastic surgeon's helmet sounds interesting. If you ever find anything out further, please do share!
