Autism Based Home Design

Exceptional Designs, Inc. was founded by Elaine Terner, the mother of a 29 year old son with autism. As my son was growing up, his behaviors caused constant damages to my home. I saw a tremendous need to create a manageable home environment without the disruption and cost of frequent repairs. I attended the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale and acquired a Diploma in Residential Design and I am a RESNA Certified Assistive Technology Professional. My background also includes majoring in Elementary Education at Lesley College n/k/a Lesley University. My experience has taught me that if the home environment is customized to fit the needs and behaviors of the special needs individual, he feels a sense of wellbeing and will be more receptive to educational and

therapeutic interventions. The chances of behavioral meltdowns are greatly diminished. Therefore, when that individual reaches adulthood, he will be performing at his best. I approach each design project on an individual basis keying in to whatever triggers a happy response in that person. I implement a calming color scheme as the background for furniture design that minimizes the chance of injury and the placement of select sensory accessories based upon the individual’s behavior and preferences. The design plan is determined through an evaluation process based upon information gathered from the other family members and through observation of the person being served. In the end, we have a manageable, attractive, harmonious home environment in which everyone’s morale is at its highest level producing the optimum outcome possible. Exceptional Designs, Inc. just completed a kitchen remodel at a United Cerebral Palsy group

home in Davie in which a caregiver only kitchen was converted to a “community†kitchen where the residents can now participate in food preparation. The residents were very excited to watch the construction process and thanked me profusely when the kitchen was finished. Their spirits were lifted and so was their self- esteem.
