Guest guest
Our son will be entering third grade in the fall at Atlantis Academy in Coral Springs and he loves going to school there. This will be his third year attending Atlantis Academy for school/camp, and we plan for him to stay there through high school. April

Guest guest
Hello April, You can see all McKay participating schools here: http://www.floridaschoolchoice.org/Information/privateschooldirectory/default.as\ px?prgmtype=2 Our typical daughter attends American Heritage and if their American Academy program for special needs students is of the same quality as their regular school I would consider it worth looking at. http://www.ahschool.com/ Steve Moyer > > Hello April: Hi there my son is 5 year old entering kinder in the fall. > Coral Springs would be a bit far for my son, but I want to ask you in the > event that I ever consider moving to that city and/or if my son doesn't > fit into a cluster " exactly " . His dianosis is PDD, has minor stims, good behavior, > excellent with math, but his biggest deficit is in the language/speech comprehension. > So this hinders him to be in a mainstream kinder. Also has lack of focus so > he wanders from his desk. He will likely enter into a cluster...at our > neighborhood public elementary school (SandPiper Elementary in Sunrise). > > I saw your posting about Atlantis Academy school and had one question? > Are the speech and occupational therapies offered on the campus and as part > of the school day? Or do you have to pay for his therapy at the school? > > This is a big deal, since in the public school system my son would have these > therapies as part of his regular school day. > > your input is greatly appreciated..thank you. > > > > ________________________________ > > To: sList > Sent: Sat, June 5, 2010 12:51:49 PM > Subject: Re:recommend a McKay school > >  > Our son will be entering third grade in the fall at Atlantis Academy in > Coral Springs and he loves going to school there. > This will be his third year attending Atlantis Academy for school/camp, and > we plan for him to stay there through high school. > April >
Guest guest
I wholeheartly agree with Mr.Heifferon. I don't think he is being negative about cluster programs, I think he is just pointing out that they are not a good fit for every child on the spectrum. My daughter entered kindergarten in the general education setting with limited language and some pretty severe sensory issues. At that time she had no support in place in the classroom, she did however receive speech services. I had to initiate and help to implement a sensory diet and sensory breaks, the school was reluctant to provide OT services but I persisted and my daughter eventually received them. OT & Speech services in her school left alot to be desired, so she continued receiving these therapies privately. I persisted in seeing to it that my daughter receive 1-1 support from a para. Eventually the IEP team reached an agreement and she started receiving 1-1 assistance from an excellent para at school, I'll be honest it was a struggle to get all of the supports and services in place and making sure they are properly implemented requires constant monitoring, and always will. My daughter just graduated from elementary school in the general education setting with supports and services She just turned 11 in May, she is an excellent student who is on grade level and aside from the occasional fire drill or assembly sensory issues hardly ever affect her at school these days. Her speech, language and pragmatics have evolved nicely. She has many friends who treat her with kindness and respect. At the end of the day whether or not to place your child in a cluster or general ed setting is a personal choice. I knew when we chose to take this path with our daughter we were taking a chance but we felt it was a chance worth taking and we are so glad we did. I just wanted to share our experience in the hope that you might find it helpful.
