Update on & GGT Question

GGT is not a good marker for PSC or for cholestasis (blocked bile

ducts). It is a general marker for liver inflammation and stays

elevated for a long time after the inflammation has reduced. It sounds

like has had his blocked ducts " cleaned out " a bit with this ERCP

as his ALT, AST and bilirubin have come down. I think it will just take

longer for the GGT to respond in a similar fashion. I would suggest

that this isn't a test he needs to have done regularly as it doesn't

correlate well with PSC and just manages to make you more upset. If

they continue to do it, I would ignore the result and only consider the

other three test results (ALT, AST and bilirubin). I'm glad to hear he

survived his latest ERCP with no additional injuries.
