March 2010

Welcome from Dr. Shaw

I would like to welcome you to the first edition of our e-newsletter. I am proud to present this introductory e-newsletter that will contain information regarding new and updated tests, upcoming events, and webinars. It also includes biomedical discoveries, discussions, helpful articles, tips, and news. The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc. looks forward to helping you and your family reach their potential!

- Shaw, Ph.D.

Featured Topic: Vitamin D

Why is it so important?

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to increased risk for many common and serious diseases, including some common cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. Studies suggest that exposure to sunlight, which enhances the production of vitamin D in the skin, prevents many chronic diseases.

Vitamin D is essential for the formation, growth, and repair of bones. Vitamin D is necessary for normal calcium absorption and immune function. It also improves muscle strength and helps reduce inflammation.

The Vitamin D Test at The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc. can help to determine if sun exposure is adequate, if dietary vitamin D is sufficient, and to assess the likelihood of malabsorption or liver disease.

Micellized Vitamin D3: Recent Study Shows Approximately 5 Times More Absorption Than Emulsified D

The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc. & New Beginnings Nutritionals

A recent double blind study by The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc. showed Micellized D3 had approximately 5 times greater increase in serum 25(OH) vitamin D levels versus emulsified vitamin D. Micellized D3 is far superior in reaching and maintaining optimal levels of vitamin D3 over other forms of vitamin D. Studies have been conducted on micelle vitamin preparations to determine the effectiveness of this new delivery system when compared with both standard oil forms and other emulsified forms. The studies were conducted with normal health individuals varying in sex and age. The data shows that these micellized forms of fat-soluble micronutrients increased plasma levels greater than the oil forms and emulsified forms.

Is Your Sunscreen Doing You More Harm Than Good?

Environmental Working Group

In sun-drenched regions the skin protection message has been strongly delivered for years: overexposure equals skin cancer. Despite the warnings to cover up the Skin Cancer Foundation warns that more than 600,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S. and skin cancer is responsible for 8,500 deaths annually. Paradoxically, sunscreens themselves have been identified as a contributing factor in this dilemma, with new products like UV Natural promoting themselves as a safe alternative to other creams on the market which may be doing more harm than good in the ongoing battle against the sun’s harmful rays.

Don't Rely on Fortified Foods

Dr. ph Mercola

Vitamin D has major health benefits. The best source of vitamin D is from the sun, but you also see lots of foods fortified with vitamin D. Unfortunately, milk and other foods fortified with vitamin D often contain a synthetic form called ergocalciferol, or vitamin D2. This synthetic form isn’t as potent and doesn’t last as long in your body. In fact, synthetic vitamin D becomes toxic in your body at far lower levels. Too much synthetic vitamin D2 may be linked to health problems. A number of studies link synthetic vitamin D2 to irritation of the lining of blood vessels.

Ask A Doctor

With Dr. Kurt Woeller

Q: Are biomedical treatments safe?

A: Implementing dietary changes, nutritional supplementation and a variety of other biomedical interventions is very safe. Every child is different, and their reaction to therapy will vary. However, compared to many psychiatric medications (or simply doing nothing at all - which some doctors advocate) the implementation of many biomedical therapies is generally well-tolerated and successful.

What do all those lines and graphs on your test results mean? It can be very confusing trying to decipher all the markers by yourself, and then what are you supposed to with the information? Dr. Kurt Woeller can help. He will analyze and review the test results, record it, and send you a link to the video.
