OMG debbie email me back because that's exactly what I am trying to do right now. I'm starting to develop a non profit which will provide after care and the weekend respite that the med waiver just isn't getting to provide. The fact is this idea has probably running through all our heads at one point or another. aka enzos mom Connected by MOTOBLUR™ on T-Mobile Grassroots idea As I sit here on a Saturday, Sunday, or any day off from school, I see my son bored and doing all the things he should not do. I know I can keep him busy to a certain extent, but not for 12 hours, as other moms I have other responsibilities and I may even want to have 5 minutes to myself. The point of all of this is an idea that has been rattling around in my mind for about 5 years. It is more of a question I have asked myself many times, which is why is there not a place, or a center, for special needs children? What I mean is a place where they can go and play and feel comfortable, this place can also provide different therapies if the parents desire, one place for everything-not run here for OT, here for speech, here for PT, here for ABA, music therapy, sensory therapy, and can go on and on. We as parents of these children know what it is like to feel like a pinball machine bouncing across South Florida to take these children to their therapies, and this is besides traveling all over town for errands and our other children. One centrally located place where they can go on weekends, days off, to play, socialize, also bring in typical children to model. Therapies offered to parents if this desire, but one central location.Maybe this is a pie-in-the sky idea? But can you just imagine if it actually could happen?I am putting this out there to see if other parents feel the same way.If enough do, maybe we can join forces and resources to make something like this happen if possible.I know this is a big proposal, just let me know what you guys think.Looking forward to hearing from everyone,Debbie Moed

Since I posted the message about the project, I have received a few emails from moms wanting to get involved, wanting to know what they can do. Most likely more will join in. What is the next step? As I thought and as one momsuggested, we need to start coordinating some fundraising?DebbieTo: sList Sent: Sat, May 22, 2010 10:25:13 PMSubject: Re: Grassroots idea

,I will email the list. I live in Coral Springs so we are pretty close so we can meet for coffee.Where my son goes to therapy, there is an Autism Health and Wellness magazine. In the current issue, there is an advertisement for a place that writes grants. I can forward you the information if you like.DebbieTo: sList Sent: Mon, May 24, 2010 12:09:11 PMSubject: Re: Grassroots idea

Debbie I am a mom but I am also an OT. I'm a lincense professional and just took a short course on grant writting. To do this the right way. We need a grant and a group of professionals. I don't enjoy ARC or the Lucanis Center I believe its called. I don't know about you but I have ideas about this and really can't wait to get things started. Email me off this list so we can meet up for coffee. I reside in Weston. Give me a heads up when we can meet. Thanks Connected by MOTOBLURâ„¢ on T-Mobile Grassroots idea

Why not just do a round-robin of playdates at the homes of those interested... everyone brings potluck and if your home is too messy or too small you can choose a park, the beach etc. as your meeting location when it's your turn to play host/hostess. You could make a Yahoo group or something and keep track of it on the calendar within the group.

Just an idea... my 8 year old would enjoy meeting other kids too. She's lonely.

I've thought the same thing.  ARC is set up for 18 year olds and up, but there is nothing for younger kids.  I just don't understand why this is.  Liability-wise, it would be too expensive for parents to run an organized program.  The insurance would be a killer.  It would have to be funded and run like ARC operates.

Sara just so you know that there is something at ARC but you can't be on the Waiver and I think it's like once a month. Though your child dosent need a baby sitting place to be dropped off to. He needs to be in a place where his time is as productive as ours. Do you understand what I mean?

You know what call me an idealistic or a dreamer. But this program looks to me like a center program. I don't want a center program. Our kids are not in a MEMORY SUPPORT UNIT. They need to really learn job skills of the real world. Center base programs are not real world. That's why institutions are out the window. That place is probably funded right now because if you do go these rural areas in FL. You really can't find any thing. Believe me I know. Living as a resident of Brevard county myself in my son's early years of therapies. Its been over 10 years since I lived in those areas and still things can't compare to south FL.

If that is what you want then ARC and Lucanis Center fits your child. Though I am looking to raise a community.

That's great thanks for sharing but that's not what I am looking for in my non profit. I don't want to provide baby sitting. I can't get a grant for helping moms get a well deserved break but I can get a grant to help your children and mine along the way. And that's my purpose. I am in the same boat as you.

Like can you answer me when I ask questions such as "Where do you see your son/daughter in 10 years from now? 20 years from now? Can you give me an answer? Do you know what your options are? Have you and your child decided on life goals? Its all unknown for me as well. But if I expect others to answer these question for me then am I really getting my son ready for the real world. I am preparing his neurotically siblings for the real world and why can't he have the same opportunity? I am not settling for what is out there right now because they don't meet my standards.

OMG debbie email me back because that's exactly what I am trying to do right now. I'm starting to develop a non profit which will provide after care and the weekend respite that the med waiver just isn't getting to provide. The fact is this idea has probably running through all our heads at one point or another. aka enzos mom Connected by MOTOBLURâ„¢ on T-Mobile Grassroots idea

As I sit here on a Saturday, Sunday, or any day off from school, I see my son bored and doing all the things he should not do. We as parents of these children know what it is like to feel like a pinball machine bouncing across South Florida to take these children to their

therapies, and this is besides traveling all over town for errands and our other children.

IMHO, what we need are more options for our children, not less. I think ARC has a great program, where the kids can go play, have a good time, and be safe and secure at the same time. There is definitely a place for that type of program, as well as for a more instructional program, like the one you describe.

Sara just so you know that there is something at ARC but you can't be on the Waiver and I think it's like once a month. Though your child dosent need a baby sitting place to be dropped off to. He needs to be in a place where his time is as productive as ours. Do you understand what I mean?

You are right about options denise. We are so limited that parents just give up. There are tons of kids like my son. Plus enzo is not on meds denise. Do you know how I feel doing what feels right and everyone goes with the current. How enzo can't follow along with the high functioning kids but gets irritated when treated like a low function child. All I know is I am tired of being told what our kids can't do though no one can find out what are kids can do. Every program enzo has gone to they work on his issues and forget about age appropriate things. Every kid is different I know denise but there is something always missing in every place we go to. I just want to get rid of the idea of PCM, the mats on the ground, the sensory rooms in a closet. Some of you guys know on here what I am talking about. When I treat if its a patient or enzo like an animal then they will behave like one. I know you love noah and are a great mom like me. For god sake you created this support group and we south fl moms thank you. I'm not knocking any place for what they have to offer. Its just time to make something new. That's all that I am saying. Well Sara Just so you know I'm not trying to miss inform you but my son attended ARC for summer and aftercare last year. The kids who qualified for there once a month respite were the ones who were not on med wavier. I would call again and maybe ask for the camp coordinator who is also in charge of this program. I know of a mom who also worked there and had 2 sons on the spectrum which her boys were 6 and 7 would go there. And I know from my sons age group they we're 11 or 12. Really its like a once a month respite that even when my son was there I found out because I talked to another mom. They never told me about this because they new my son was on the wavier. They don't really tell everyone of all there services to all because they have such a waiting list regardless I think you should call back and ask to be placed on the list. If you keep calling every month they are bound to get your son in there. Good luck :)CatConnected by MOTOBLUR™ on T-Mobile Grassroots ideaTo: sList@ yahoogroups. comDate: Saturday, May 22, 2010, 8:21 PM As I sit here on a Saturday, Sunday, or any day off from school, I see my son bored and doing all the things he should not do.
