Well Sara Just so you know I'm not trying to miss inform you but my son attended ARC for summer and aftercare last year. The kids who qualified for there once a month respite were the ones who were not on med wavier. I would call again and maybe ask for the camp coordinator who is also in charge of this program. I know of a mom who also worked there and had 2 sons on the spectrum which her boys were 6 and 7 would go there. And I know from my sons age group they we're 11 or 12. Really its like a once a month respite that even when my son was there I found out because I talked to another mom. They never told me about this because they new my son was on the wavier. They don't really tell everyone of all there services to all because they have such a waiting list regardless I think you should call back and ask to be placed on the list. If you keep calling every month they are bound to get your son in there. Good luck :)CatConnected by MOTOBLURâ„¢ on T-Mobile Grassroots ideaTo: sList@ yahoogroups. comDate: Saturday, May 22, 2010, 8:21 PM As I sit here on a Saturday, Sunday, or any day off from school, I see my son bored and doing all the things he should not do. I know I can keep him busy to a certain extent, but not for 12 hours, as other moms I have other responsibilities and I may even want to have 5 minutes to myself. The point of all of this is an idea that has been rattling around in my mind for about 5 years. It is more of a question I have asked myself many times, which is why is there not a place, or a center, for special needs children? What I mean is a place where they can go and play and feel comfortable, this place can also provide different therapies if the parents desire, one place for everything-not run here for OT, here for speech, here for PT, here for ABA, music therapy, sensory therapy, and can go on and on. We as parents of these children know what it is like to feel like a pinball machine bouncing across South Florida to take these children to theirtherapies, and this is besides traveling all over town for errands and our other children. One centrally located place where they can go on weekends, days off, to play, socialize, also bring in typical children to model. Therapies offered to parents if this desire, but one central location.Maybe this is a pie-in-the sky idea? But can you just imagine if it actually could happen?I am putting this out there to see if other parents feel the same way.If enough do, maybe we can join forces and resources to make something like this happen if possible.I know this is a big proposal, just let me know what you guys think.Looking forward to hearing from everyone,Debbie Moed

Hi Debbie and everyone else who has contributed to this post...I am new to this

group, and a very close friend of mine and mother of a child with disabilities

sent me this grassroots post for a reason. I am a behavior analyst working in

Miami with children with ASD's and was a " sensory kid " myself before any of us

knew what that was.

I am in the process of opening a multisensory activity center which is similar

to what you have all been discussing. My ultimate goal is to provide a place

where all children can come together, interact, while balancing their systems

for optimal coping and functioning in this messy busy world. Play-In will be

located in Midtown Miami, in a warehouse which will offer services such as open

play, homework helper (for siblings and all kids), birthday parties, ABA and OT.

The gym will have therapeutic equipment and can be used for therapy (if private

OT's/PT's want to use the space) but will offer a unique environment for all

kids. It won't be like Monkey Joes (no bounce houses) but will have

trampolines, climbing structures, lots of swings, zip lines, bikes, and a dark

room. I am very excited about this project and construction began just

yesterday. We hope to be open by September.

Last summer I went on-line and read many many blogs from parents who just needed

somewhere to take their kids on the weekends or during non therapy hours where

they could access similar types of equipment. All of the children I have worked

with have helped inspire me in so many ways, so I hope this center will give

back to them and help take a load off of all the brave parents out there.

I am open to any suggestions, comments from the community!

All my best

Nina

We're in Volusia county. They probably operate differently in this county. I've spoken to two different people at ARC in Volusia county, and there are no such programs here. I wish they existed here. Volusia county is a complete void for our children. Not sure why we're here.

Hello and everyone

I am meeting tomorrow with the people from ARC, to see if I cna do a music program for children with special needs. I teach Music Together, and would love to run a class there for young children, and maybe another one for a older group. It will not be therapyu, it will be just fun and good positve stimulation and social for families and maybe we cna even include siblings, to have a model of behavior and making it inclusive, but comfortable .

I will keep you posted . I hope we can do it!

From your end, let me know if you would be interested, please

I love this idea too but I'm in St Lucie county and it seems like everyone else is around Broward co . I will travel to get my son in a social group but I'm not sure how far that would be.

for about 5 years. It is more of a question I have asked myself many times,

which is why is there not a place, or a center, for special needs children?

What I mean is a place where they can go and play and feel comfortable, this

place can also provide different therapies if the parents desire, one place

for everything-not run here for OT, here for speech, here for PT, here for

ABA, music therapy, sensory therapy, and can go on and on. We as parents of

these children know what it is like to feel like a pinball machine bouncing

across South Florida to take these children to their therapies, and this is

besides traveling all over town for errands and our other children.

One centrally located place where they can go on weekends, days off, to play,

socialize, also bring in typical children to model. Therapies offered to parents

if this desire, but one central location.

Maybe this is a pie-in-the sky idea? But can you just imagine if it actually

could happen?

I am putting this out there to see if other parents feel the same way.

If enough do, maybe we can join forces and resources to make something like

this happen if possible.

I know this is a big proposal, just let me know what you guys think.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone,

Debbie Moed

Count me in, LOVE the idea!GabiSent from my iPhone

I love this idea too but I'm in St Lucie county and it seems like everyone else is around Broward co . I will travel to get my son in a social group but I'm not sure how far that would be.

I really like the idea of having social gatherings at each other's houses. That's one of the reasons I offered to have people over to trick or treat in Parkland last Halloween. In Cypresshead we have a club house with a kitchen and a pool which can hold a decent size group and I would be willing to host a gathering one weekend this summer and then again in the fall. For kids who don't like or know how to swim, we can have indoor activities as well. Let me know how many of you would be interested in this.

For those of you in the Plantation area Pal Dynamites is for 5 and up and includes sibs. They bowl, basketball, softball, bike, bingo, dances. Each sport runs for about 2 months and cost 15. except bowling which is now 30. (the last time I went bowling without them I spent nearly that in the one afternoon.) They have "kids" up to and including adults and the woman that runs it, Luz, is a saint.

This is one of the reasons that I joined this group!! I would love to start a "playgroup" for our children who want to play outside with other kids, but whom we feel we must watch at all moments! My son is 10, and feels that he can go outside and play ball and ride his bike like others can. The sad part is that he will either get into an argument with another child if one remark is said, or he will think that he is more independent than his skills allow.

There are many businesses that would open their doors for us as well. For instance, if we told the local movie theatre, bowling alley, or restaurant that we were interested in going to their place of business, we can get a discounted rate or special accommodations. I spent a good part of this year speaking with many local businesses in the Broward area who will also work with a group on fundraising. (Just a thought for future reference!)

I live in Plantation, and I am willing to open my home for a playgroup. I do not have a pool, but my home is filled with enough toys to have a small preschool!! We are also in walking distance to a park, ice cream shop, and Starbucks!!

i think we should organize into groups--by ages. then set a day and place to meet--see who signs up and go from there. there are too many people interested to start getting everyone's opinions--it will get too complicated. i would be more than happy to facilitate. let me know. thanks. kim

We as parents of these children know what it is like to feel like a

pinball machine bouncing across South Florida to take these children to their therapies, and this is besides traveling all over town for errands and our other children. One centrally located place where they can go on weekends, days off, to play, socialize, also bring in typical children to model. Therapies offered to parents if this desire, but one central location.Maybe this is a pie-in-the sky idea? But can you just imagine if it actually could happen?I am putting this out there to see if other parents feel the same way.If enough do, maybe we can join forces and resources to make something like this happen if possible.I know this is a big proposal, just let me know what you guys think.Looking forward to hearing from everyone,Debbie Moed

i think we should organize into groups--by ages. then set a day and place to meet--see who signs up and go from there. there are too many people interested to start getting everyone's opinions--it will get too complicated. i would be more than happy to facilitate. let me know. thanks. kim

As I sit here on a Saturday, Sunday, or any day off from school, I see my son bored and doing all the things he should not do. I know I can keep him busy to a certain extent, but not for 12 hours, as other moms I have other responsibilities and I may even want to have 5 minutes to myself. The point of all of this is an idea that has been rattling around in my mind for about 5 years. We could also split into groups according to where we live.  Those of us with more than one kid on the spectrum could find it difficult if groups are split according to age as we could be running all over.  I agree with Kim that someone needs to co-ordinate a meet.  I am happy to help with this also.
