why would you believe that he is only moderately affected if he is only beginning to read & write @ age 16? Were his IEPs & testing not reflecting growth in these areas? How are his computer skills? He may need a more intensive/structured environment and a behavior plan should be part of his IEP to protect him and for more insight for the school personnel.

Hi, can anyone recommend (or not recommend) schools in central Florida (Orange, Lake, Seminole, Polk Counties) that are good for older kids who are moderately affected? My son is 16, he's making progress but right now would need an aide, is only beginning to read and write, has some behaviors at times, but is very social and aware of the world around him.

Thanks for any info.

sorry, that came out harsh sounding and that was not the intention. You may be starting to look at schools that will be starting job sampling which is what they are now calling community based instruction for his future after high school. So, with that in mind - what training do the teachers have in preparing him with functional skills if he doesn't quite read or write? Does he like cooking? There are culinary programs. Does he like animals or plants etc. His strengths should be made aware to the ESE department. Its great that he is aware of what is going around him. Does he do chores at home? Is he independent at home, sports etc? These would be great strengths. And they would be a foundation to build on.

I say moderately affected because he is very verbal, social and I know he has intelligence. It's been a mixture of behaviors, low muscle tone and constant changing of teachers and not the right teaching methods that's been holding him back. He's improved significantly over the years with biomed treatments but needs to catch up now.

I recently took him for RPM training and I'm trying to get his current school to try it. AT the training, he was spelling, doing addition and subtraction while his school still has him doing one to one correspondence. I'm sure my son is bored out of his mind with that by now.
