Guest guest
Much thanks to Ven Sequenzia, for helping to organize the protests against the push to HMOs for Medicaid. You Helped Derail Risky Medicaid Overhaul! It's by far the best news Medicaid recipients have received in this difficult 2010 session. Legislative leaders (and Governor Crist) have agreed that there is too much risk and not enough potential benefit associated with ramming through any massive Medicaid managed care expansion this year. After negotiating for the better part of a week over their differing approaches, House and Senate leaders announced that they will not pursue an overhaul of Medicaid this year, but rather will continue to explore options over a longer period. As of now, both the House`s proposal to expand Medicaid managed care statewide over several years, and the Senate`s proposal to expand the current Medicaid Reform experiment to 19 additional counties next year appear dead. This outcome could not have occurred without the efforts made by Medicaid advocates and our partners. You helped explain the risk of moving ahead given the many unanswered questions about the current Reform experiment and no fully thought-out plan for expanding it. However, the session is not scheduled to end until Friday, and the Legislature must at a minimum agree to ask the feds for an extension of the Medicaid waiver. We need to continue to watch carefully until adjournment. Thank you for rising to the challenge to protect the vulnerable Floridians who rely on Medicaid!
