It seems like you could hire a paraprofessional who is experienced, a college student studying special ed or autism, even another parent of a child with autism could be one. As for respite, if you go through a respite company or organization you just may have to interview lots of people until the find a match. The ad in craigslist is a good idea as is posting on a college bulletin board.

I would put an ad in Craig's List under education and look for someone with special needs experience.

Hi. I have 9 year old son with autism. I am looking to hire someone to give extra help in the afternoons and weekends. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what person to hire? A college student? A teacher asst? A therapist? Where would I begin to look for this individual or individuals? How much do I pay? Would it be beneficial to use respite services? This is new to me and I want to do the best thing? Thanks!!
