Guest guest
I had allergic reaction to sulpha in tapezole. It seems most people can stay on it with the minor reactions. My reaction was, my lymph nodes on the back of my neck swellled, under my jaw swelled, I got big pressure and pain around my eyes, head ache, dizzy and started to get uncordiated and couldn't consentrate, then hives. Guest guest
Pam: I found your comments on this VERY interesting! Thanks for sharing! My Joe was encouraged to shift gears radically and went through with RAI after a two hour discussion with a neurosurgeon at the VA after he went in to see them on an emergency visit because he was ITCHING so badly from Methimazole (sp?). His agenda was singular: He wanted the itching to stop. He's now on PTU after having had RAI. So far, so good. It's good to be aware that this has happened to others even if his decision for RAI is a done deal. Thanks again for sharing! Ann

Guest guest
Hi Pam, While both ATDs and sulfa drugs contain sulfur molecules, they are different chemical compounds. I haven't heard of people with sulfa allergies having trouble with ATDs like they do with sulfites. And I couldn't find any reference to this in the literature. Considering the high doses of meds you started on, I think if there was a cross-reaction, you would have had major problems. Hope this helps, Elaine

Guest guest
Hi Elaine, I haven't found anything about sulpha being the the ATD's either. I am going to call the Walgreen's pharmacist myself. My husband talked to him also. If they have some information saying there is sulpha in it. I will find out where they got there information. If there is no sulpha in the ATD's I best be figuring out what I am allergic to that is in the ATD. Thanks, Deb
Guest guest
Hi Deb, Maybe it is the fillers they use in them. I wonder if they could make a compound prescription for you in a capsule? What were your reactions to both meds...I'm sorry I can't remember, I should be in bed LOL...any how, maybe it was a side effect of them and would have gone away as the dose was lowered? I am off to bed now, night and will answer your other e-mail tomorrow, interesting idea, many pro's and con's to consider. Guest guest
Jody, My reaction was to methimazole, my lymph nodes on the back of my neck swellled, under my jaw swelled, I got big pressure and pain around my eyes, head ache, dizzy and started to get uncordiated and couldn't consentrate, then hives. It started slowly over the 3 and 1/2 weeks. The docs uped my dosage from 10mg a day to 15mg. about 3 days before I had to stop taking it. During that time, all the symptoms got worse and that is when the hives appeared. I had to stop taking it for the scan and it all went away within a couple of days. The symptoms had me stumped during that time, I thought it was part of the thyroid disease. The swelling under my jaw was contributing to me not being able to swallow. I ended up getting tests looking for infection, because of the lymph node. Then I realized, it was the methimazole after I had read something in the archives and brought it up at chat. I think the article said " sulfur " . My nutritionist told me to be careful of eating broccoli, cabbage etc. because they have " sulfur " in them. I assumed it did the same as sulpha because I told her I had an allergy to sulpha. " Sulpha " (which is a preservative, it is in alot of canned foods, medicines, wine, etc.), so my husband called the Walgreens pharmacist. The pharmacist told him that Tapezole, methimazole, and PTU had " sulpha " in it. It seemed that they went and looked it up somewhere. I told several docs what the pharmacist said, none said anything to the opposite (we know how good that is though). I know I better find out exactly " what " caused the reaction, and if it is one of the components in Synthroid. I downloaded the .pdf file for synthroid and I still have to download the Tapezole. I am going to look at ingrediants that are in both. I am going to see if I can go to an allergist or something to get this figured out. I am also going to call Walgreens. I'll let you know what they say. Deb

Guest guest
Hi Deb, That sounds like a horrible reaction. There are a few doctors out there using perchlorate as an ATD, and there's always the old standby of saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI) if you want to continue with ATD treatment. Take care, Elaine

Guest guest
Hi Deb, I think the ATDs are just the sort of drugs that many people can react to with dermatitis. In some Eastern medical traditions, this could be looked at as detoxifying. Some people who developed hives were able to continue on with a lower ATD dose and the hives went away. Since hives can spontaneously appear in GD, the drugs may not have been the cause. The chemical formula for Tapazole has 4 Carbons, 6 Hydrogens, 2 Nitrogens and 1 Sulfur molecule. It could be that you're allergic to sulfur more so than sulfates since they both have sulfur molecules. It's probably going to remain a mystery, though.
