Guest guest Posted April 25, 2010 Report Share Posted April 25, 2010 advocate is equal to mediator...they keep you from losing your cool during an IEP, they prepare you for what is going to take place and make sure that you have all your ducks in a row, they organize your brain, they make sure your kids get all they need, and they make sure that everyone plays by the rules...you most definately need one in Florida unless you are trained to do it yourself...however, I think its particularly hard when it is your kid they are talking about...even if you are qualified....and two heads are always better than one! Guest guest Posted April 26, 2010 Report Share Posted April 26, 2010 An advocate is some who will assit you in the IEP process. You do not have to have one, but many people do. The advocate does exactly that, advocates for your child and his/her educational needs. So many times schools will bully parents and/or try and cut services. The advocate is usually the one to say hold on this is not OK, makes sure goals are appropriate and measureable, etc. I acutally will be participating in an IEP meeting tomorrow for a friends who's school is dong exactly this to her.
