News From the Heart Issue #3 March 12, 2010 FND's 25th Anniversary: Pensacola FND held the second 25th Anniversary Celebration of the year in Pensacola March 5-6. The celebration kicked off with a Collaborative Communication workshop on Friday, March 5. L-R: POPIN Co-Director, Brown; FND Executive Director, Rich La Belle; Harding; Jay Gilliard, President of Upside 2 DownsA Community Outreach meeting was held later that evening and the celebration concluded on Saturday, March 6, with a tree-planting at Homes Miracle League Park. Visit our Cafe Press store to order now! Board President Profile: -Byrd -Byrd is a mother of three children with disabilities and a wife to a loving, supportive husband. She is employed full-time as a paralegal in the Antitrust Division of the Office of the Attorney General. Her priority in life is as an advocate for her children who have been diagnosed with autism to ensure they receive services and education under IDEA Part B and Part C. She volunteers her time assisting individuals with disabilities and their families locate services, support networks, information to become self advocates and other needs within their community. As the former President of National Autism Association of Florida (NAAFL), advocates for and educates the public on issues related to autism spectrum disorders which include the autism insurance mandate, med waiver services, education and the use of biomedical and dietary interventions to treat the underlying health issues that commonly occur in individuals with autism spectrum disorders. She also runs an autism biomedical support group under NAAFL in Tallahassee where parents can share information and experiences in their implementation of biomedical and dietary interventions. She participates on various online support networks as a member posting information or providing support and as a moderator for a message board. was appointed by the Governor to Family Care Council, Area 2. She also sits on the ESE Parent Advisory Board for Leon County Schools. She serves as a parent liaison to the grant funded Project Autism Spectrum Specialized Education and Training (ASSET) at Florida State University (FSU) where speech and language pathology students are exposed to the lives of individuals with autism by participating in family, community and school activities. She volunteers as a community contact for parents seeking information from various local organizations such as the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities at FSU, FirstWords Project at FSU and Early Steps Program. 's mission in life is to help her children and individuals with disabilities reach their fullest potential. She is grateful for the most amazing people she has met in the disability community and looks forward to the incredible work that will be accomplished while serving as a board member for the Family Network on Disabilities. FND's Children's Week event in Dunedin on March 13Please join us for a Local Children's Week event, Hanging of the Hands ceremony at the Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center on Saturday, March 13th from 12:00pm to 1:30pm. This is a FREE event for the whole family! The Recreation Center is located at 550 Ln, Dunedin, FL 34698. See mapfor directions. Children will witness the hanging of their hand art work in the lobby of the recreation center, followed by story time presented by the Palm Harbor Public Library. Story time will include a sign language interpreter. Children can make a hand at this event to be submitted for the Hanging of the Hands Ceremony April 11th at the State Capitol in Tallahassee. Other activities include bounce houses; opportunities to visit with local firefighters and having a hands-on experience with a real fire truck, courtesy of the Dunedin Fire Department; visits with Mr. Jim the clown and more! Families will also have access to the Stirling Skate Park for a small fee! Fees for skate park are the following; with a skate park membership $2, with a Dunedin Recreation ID $4, visitor $7. **Signed parent release, helmet, knee and elbow pads are required in order to participate in skate park fun. Limited refreshments will be available on a first come first serve basis provided by CiCi's Pizza Countryside.
