Guest guest
, My son was diagnosed with CD this summer at the age of 15. He weighed 65 lbs. at approx. 4'9 " . He has been GF since August. We have tried Ensure and Boost and he won't drink either one; he gags on them. The only thing that has worked for us is for him to drink a milkshake every day using Prairie Farms ice cream and whole milk. There have been days when I had difficulty getting much food down him, especially when he was healing. When he had his growth hormone test this week, they found that he had gained 4 lbs. since August. This might not sound like much but I was ready to do the GF dance!! Over Christmas, he got a virus and lost weight. I talked with the GI and he said he would be happy with a 1 lb. weight gain per month. I told him I could gain that in a week, every week!! So...at this point, I am starting to see some positive changes. The GI told me to use butter (not margarine), cream, sour cream, etc., anything fattening. Unfortunately, there's not much he eats that would use these things. He was a high carb eater prior to diagnosis so I try to make GF chocolate chip cookie dough every week and keep it in the frig. He likes them fresh and warm so I bake them every day, sometimes twice a day. He was missing some foods so I bought Bette Hagman's " Living Well Without Wheat, The Gluten-Free Gourmet " cookbook. Her breadstick recipe is wonderful, my whole family loved them. I bought the Tostido's Salsa Con Queso (nacho cheese sauce) and he swears they're better than what he used to get at the pizza place. As he was never much of a bread eater, I have not yet made bread but plan to. I did try to make hamburger buns and also bought 2 varieties but he didn't like them. Something else that is easy on his stomach when it is not feeling the greatest is Yoplait Creamy Strawberry/Banana yogurt - I buy the " Grande " size and he takes it in small containers for his school lunch. It is lowfat but I can't find one that he will eat that isn't. I contacted the company and they said it is GF. Our GI also wants him on calcium daily and I put him on a combination malic acid and magnesium for his aching muscles. The GI okayed this. Last week, the GI started him on Reglan 3 x's a day for 4-6 weeks as he says he feels full most of the time. The GI stated that his stomach may not be emptying into his small intestine quick enough and this will help to get it going. I'm not sure yet if we are seeing any improvement. Hope this helps. Hang in there, it does get easier!! Judy kathi---i would love to hear how you got weight back on your daughter. my 3 girls saw the ped gi yesterday. my twins have both lost weight (14 1/2 yrs), but the ped is especially worried about one of them. she has lost about 8 lbs since the week before christmas. she is the only one of my celiac kids that LOOKS sick. she is eating very little. she is down to 73 lbs. i ama afraid she is going to end up in the hospital with a feeding tube if se can't get some weight on her. anyone else have some ideas to help her to gain weight? christine _________________________________________________________________ Don’t just search. I used a smoothie made from coconut milk, whey protein powder (half a scoop of show me the whey--a whole scoop overwhelms my digestive system), and berries. Occasionally I'd add nut milk or wholefat yogurt to thin it out. A dash of vanilla extract was always nice, too. I didn't start gaining, though, until I started eating meat again. And then I gained WAY too much. My weight seems to be normalizing again, but I gained 40 lbs in three months--way too much, way too fast. ygg

Guest guest
Hi, Our ped told us to try carnation instant breakfast. I contacted Nestle and all of the powder mixes are gf except malt. The premade liquid is NOT gf. Anyway our ped suggested whole milk with it. My ds drinks one daily lots of vitamins etc. Also, when I called they sent coupons and recipes for it... adding icecream, bananas, pb etc. Even a recipe for the vanilla flavor with oj or sherbet (like a creamsicle). We have stuck to the rich milk chocolate flavor and actually noticed he gained a little bit more than before at the next visit (this was before going gf). Didn't know if anyone mentioned this as a substitute for ensure, it tastes a lot better, sally
Guest guest
When I was 12yo, I was tiny and had to be put on a weight gain diet. (I was diagnosed as an infant, I am now 25yo.) Anyway, heres how my day went: -breakfast in the morning. -Then at 9:30am I had a shake consisting 2% milk, carnation instant breakfast, & powdered non-fat dried milk. -Then lunch at 11:30. -then a yogurt at 1:30. -then a snack after school. -then dinner. -then a bedtime snack(usually ice cream). 3 meals & 4 " mini-meals " a day. lots of eating, always keeping something in the stomach. In 3 months I had put on 20lbs!!! and I was still thin! ~ > > Hi, > > Our ped told us to try carnation instant breakfast. I contacted Nestle > and all of the powder mixes are gf except malt.
