Guest guest
As you must realize by now the numbers of individuals diagnosed with autism has increased to 1 in 91. And our children are growing up. I love the motto: " It is not enough to prepare our children for the world, but also to prepare the world for our children…anonymous†due to their conditions many of our children when grown will likely at some point in their lives end up in Baker Acted and into Mental health facilities. We have issues of police shooting autistics because they are not knowledgeable in recognizing or managing autism. Individuals with autism and others like them are often bullied and abused, have their medical issues ignored and often have their rights violated by others simply because they are able to. There is the question due to their disabilities will they have their rights protected and safeguarded if they were to end up Baker Acted in a mental health facility? Will they receive adequate attention to their complex medical issues? Will they be treated with dignity and respect? These are sobering questions we as their parents have to contemplate. We have to ensure that we do all we can to make the world, including such facilities, a safer place for our children, who will soon, if not already become adults. As it is that due to their complex developmental and co-morbid problems many of them will at some point for some reason or another become baker Acted and sent to a Psych Ward, many already have. We were watching Fox News, not my favorite news cable network but one does have to have access to all sorts of news, I’m neither right or left, but an independent. We recalled the college youngsters who infiltrated Acorn and it gave me an idea of how I can see what sort of world our children will experience if ever they become Baker Acted and end up in a Psych Ward. Anyway i got myself Baker Acted, i do have some 'issues', i really see it as just facets of my wiring really though. my sister has three children on different areas of the spectrum so their issues and problems, and sometimes even their gifts are all diverse in nature and functionability. I found several violations and numerous causes for concerns. I am in the middle of organizing my notes and working on writing about my experience and observations there. i am wondering if anyone else will like to recruit themselves or others to become Baker Acted or have ever been Baker Acted and to share their experiences or observations. i would like to disscuss issues that may be problemetic to an individual once they become Baker Acted. i was thinking of going to a school where i can maybe find journalist students or something like that. i enlisted myself and spent a week inside. i found it interesting that my gastro issues were ignored and they refused to to go to the hospital. i had a stoamach attack starting Sunday night and was not seen by a medical doctor until Tuesday afternoon. Now I really do have complex gastro intestinal issues that have plagued me for years and it is Friday morning where I still suffer discomfort when I swallow food, I have made an appointment with my gastroenterologist whom I will see this afternoon to look over the issue. It does help to see what would happen as a very large percentage of our autistic population have complex and often severe gut issues. i also saw that they seemed to be the milking of health insurance by keeping those of us there with health insurance captive and much longer than needed to be for the trivialist of reasons, like if your blood pressure was a little low you were not ready to disscuss dishcharge. At the same i saw folks who had no insurance tossed out the door as soon as they came in. i have no drug use history, no alcoholism, no mental illness history (unless one counts autism) i was very responsive and active and yet i was detained for an entire week with very little reason to do so other than they could. while i saw individuals with real problems and no insurance in a revolving door effect. out nearly as soon s they are in. one major issue was the fact that i have a well documented lifelong issue with gastro intestinal problem, and when I suffered a severe hours and days long stomach attack and i was told it " was all in my head " . my autistic daughter and all my neices and nephews on the spectrum all have gastro issues and it's not all in their heads, they are teenagers now and i really want to address this Baker Act, psych ward arena as well. As they will be adults soon. All of our kids will be adults soon if they are not already. anyone want to join me or who knows anyone who is willing to join in my Baker Act observaton party and later disccuss our observations and experiences? i'm also interested in looking into college youngsters in journalist schools. you can contact me offlist. autisticcrystal@... autisticsouls@... Guest guest
I was told, in the third place they sent me to (within 48 hours) that they HAVE to let you see a judge within 72 hours or release you... yet numerous people I met inside said they had been denied this right. Thanks. i could not believe that with no drug use history, no alcoholism, no mental illness history, (a childhood of LD, late speech, and some quirkiness does not automatically equal mental illness except in a psych ward.) that i was detained for an entire week!. I am very vocal and functional and if i couldn't protect myself there how can i protect our kids that are now teenagers and soon to be young adults? (we have four youngsters that are soon to hit young adulthood and i fear their days in college) i could not believe how easy it was to be Baker Acted until i became so. one elderly gentleman simply had a concussion and was confused and he was involuntary Baker Acted. meanwhile my gastro issues were adamantly ignored, my fellow patient's concussion ignored while they wanted to push all sorts of drugs on us and Although you can refuse medications it usually means the doctor will sign off on your discharge much later than sooner, hence my prolonged stay there. like to leave there you have to be very cooperative, admit you have a problem, go to group therapy, take your meds and so on... i refused meds after one very bad reaction where i BP dipped down to 70/60 and i passed out, (again no medical attention) i'm not on any medications so i reacted badly, when they tried to adjust meds i refused and my stay was made a week long. This is a real eye opening concern for me and i hope to involve others to action on what can be done. The Baker Act in itself is not flawed but it is the rampant disregard of the Baker Act and the milking of health insurance because they can do so that is a real problem, plus abuse and neglect of patients and regardless of what your rights ARE, they will and have violated them routinely. i was denied access to my medical records while i was there and upon discharge when i requested it again I was told " that my medical records belong to the doctor and he will have to agree to release them. " i promptly stated that it's against the law to deny me access to my medical records. so they will outright lie to you in the face. i almost felt like i was in an IEP meeting...
