Greetings!

Scientists at the European Food Safety Authority have completed an assessment of a study on the effect of certain food colors and the preservative sodium benzoate on children's behavior. They found limited evidence of a link between these mixtures and hyperactivity in children. More...

Early Life Immune Insult May Lead to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a debilitating disease with a

constellation of multi-system dysfunctions primarily involving the neurological, endocrine and immune systems. Recent research results suggest that early life immune insults (ELII) including developmental immunotoxicity (DIT), which is induced by xenobiotics (toxic chemicals), may offer an important clue to the origin(s) of CFS. The developing immune system is a sensitive target for environmental insult (xenobiotic, infectious agents, stress) with major ramifications for postnatal health risks. Additionally, many prenatal and early postnatal neurological lesions associated with postnatal neurobehavioral diseases are now recognized as linked to prenatal immune insult and inflammatory dysregulation. Does Celiac Disease Increase the Risk of Birth Defects?

Birth Defect Research for Children and the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness have just launched a

new project to collect data on pregnancy outcomes in the children of mothers who had celiac disease during pregnancy. Celiac Disease is a hereditary autoimmune disorder that is present in almost three million Americans. People with celiac are not able to tolerate gluten proteins found in foods containing wheat, rye or barlery. This intolerance leads to small intestinal damage and a wide range of symtoms including nutritional deficiences, intestinal cancer, osteoporosis, miscarriage and short stature in children. The new data collection project will evaluate pregnancy outcomes in cases reported to the National Birth Defect Registry by mothers who had celiac disease during pregnancy or celiac disease that was diagnosed at some time after the pregnancy. Gulf War Syndrome Linked to Chemical Exposures

A new review of studies on Gulf War Syndrome support the theory that the disorder was caused by a group

of related chemicals in pesticides used around military facilities and anti-nerve-gas pills. The group of chemicals, known as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, has long been discussed as a possible cause of Gulf War syndrome. Dr. Beatrice Golomb, an associate professor of medicine at UC San Diego reviewed 70 studies for the article. (BDRC and the University of Texas, SW are collaborating on a study that is also investigating these chemicals and potential increases in certain birth defects in the children of Gulf War veterans.)
