Amy,

First of all, calm down. I can hear the tension in your e-mail. Second,

don't worry. Is she still having wet diapers? It is completely normal for

bf babies to not poop for a few days at a time. It is a little concerning

when it happens for the first time, but as long as she is still wetting

diapers she is probably fine. You can call you pediatrician if you are

really concerned, but it's probably nothing.

Don't panic, it hasn't been *that* long.

However, if your baby is only 11 days old she should still be have frequent

BMs. It is after about 6 weeks that they may slow down drastically.

I have heard that decreased BMs will happen before decreased wet diaper

count if a newborn is not getting enough to eat, although I am not sure what

the range of normal would be, so I would check with the ped just to be sure.

But please don't panic! She sounds fine, so if it is anything it is nothing

serious.

Amy,

You should probably be waking her more frequently and encouraging her to

nurse more. You could try carrying her in a sling so that if she stirs, you

know it and can try to nurse her. The other thing I will suggest is that

you get her some cranial sacral therapy or chiropractic care. If she is out

of alignment, that can make her not poop much. You do want her pooping

regularly at least twice a day at this point. Have you tried switching her

to your other breast when she starts to slow down nursing, you can then

switch back again to the first breast if she gets done with the second. By

switching when she is slowing down, you catch her for the other side while

she is still awake.

Ok I think I am in trouble.

Ok is amazing and she never crys and nurses wonderfully and I am not

sore anymore and all m y blisters are gone BUT she hasn't pooped since

Saturday afternon and it is now monday morning. I was reading in what to

expect that they should pppo 5 times a day!!!!!! I hne read here 2 times a

day is ok. But she did ONE on saturday and NONE on sunday so now I am

worried

that she isn't getting enough to eat. I am in major panic mood cause of the

problems I had with . She slept 7 hours last night and I tried to wake

her up after about 4 hours to eat but she woudl have no part of it she

wanted

to sleep. She sleeps ALLLLLL the time she wakes up to eat goes back to sleep

eats sleeps. I am going to make sure she doesn't go more then 2 hours

between

feedings today (she will usually sleep 3 or 4 hours during the day) and if

she is going to start sleeping so long at night she wont' be nursing enough.

I don't know what else to do?? ANy idea's?? Should I take her to get

weighted?? She was 8 lbs 8oz at birth how much should an 11 day old baby

have gained/lost??? I know they should be back to birth weight or close to

it

by 14 days. But I am worried caus eof the poop thing. I don't think she has

lost any weight though.

Amy,

She should still be having multiple stools per day. If she is really sleepy

she could be having a bilirubin elevation--jaundice--and I would call the

pediatrician's office right away!!! They may want to do a blood test.

In the meantime, *do* feed her as often as possible to help her clear the

bilirubin out.

Wishing you well,

Amy Lynn

Every baby is different. Mine started out at 8lb 15oz and went down to 8

pounds before he started going up, he was a sleepy baby and would often

fall asleep at the breast no matter what I did to keep him up. He's 4 weeks

today and 8lb 5oz, my doctor isn't too concerned as he looks good, sleeps

and eats well and has plenty of wet diapers, plus is very alert and

obviously reaching milestones, he's holding his head up for brief periods,

responding to voices, etc.

For my own peace of mind, I'm doing all I can to ensure a good supply,

drinking a combination of Mother's Milk Tea and Fenugreek tea, plenty of

water and trying to cut back on activity to be sure I'm well rested enough

to be producing as I should.
