I agree.  They should be for the most part, be against

the law.  I feel the system has no right to

decide exclusively what they think is appropriate to teach my daughter, how

much she can learn, and put limits on her.

Not to mention the fact that she is not getting any real life education

being with her peers(sorry Mr. Principal, hallways don’t count)and that

segregation brings us full circle to a community that has no compassion, understanding

and ability to be friends and coworkers of our differently abled population.  This has happened to most human populations

of color, ethnicity, religion.  Enough

should just be enough already.

I feel it would be useful, especially at this time

of the year, to exchange experiences with the

various autism clusters.

We, parents of a severly autistis child, are

struggling with the question of where to place

him for his kindergarten year.

ANY input from ANYbody most welcome.

Hi Joan,

I sent you the information on this technology " Cranial Electrotherapy

Stimulation " (CES). It is similar to TMS but instead stimulating the brain

with magnetic pulses this method delivers electrical pulses via electrodes

on the surface of the skin (ear lobes and forehead). The AlphaStim device is

relatively inexpensive $500-$800 I believe it requires a prescription from a

psychiatrist to purchase. The technology is similar to a TENS unit. In

addition, if is interested in the therapy she can treat her children

at home with this device as it does not require specialized training

How Does Brain Training Help?

By training the brain using advanced technology known as Neurofeedback,

individuals are able to help their brains operate more effectively and

efficiently. When areas of the brain are not functioning properly it can

cause a variety of difficulties, including problems with learning, behavior,

cognition, mood, attention, and sleep.

Since brain training enhances cortical function, it correspondingly brings a

number of positive improvements in other areas of one's life.

What Can be Helped by Training the Brain?

The same type of problems medications are used for, including...

ADHD

Anxiety

Attachment Disorders/Adoption Issues

Autistic Spectrum Disorders/Aspergers

Depression

Insomnia/Poor Sleep

Migraines & Fibromyalgia

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Seizures

Neurofeedback is backed by solid Research. It puts the power to improve

your life in your hands.

Come to our Free educational lecture and learn about the brain--discover why

training the brain has such profound implications.

What will You Learn at the Lecture?

At the lecture you'll learn about the brain and how it functions. We'll

discuss what can go wrong in the brain and show how training with

Neurofeedback can help. People who attend tell us they find it fascinating.

We'll hook up a volunteer to a special computer and watch them change their

brain.

We'll answer questions such as:

* Can training be done while on medications?

* How quickly can it improve attention, sleep, anxiety, or mood?

* Do the improvements last?

* Can people reduce their meds by training the brain? If so, how?

* Is it based on solid research and science?

People don't always realize medications for ADHD, anxiety, depression and

sleep are designed to change the brain. The changes are temporary.

Neurofeedback is an innovative type of biofeedback. By training the brain

with Neurofeedback, individuals learn to manage their brains better rather

than relying on medications. A well trained brain has greater control over

behavior, cognition, impulses, moods, and sleep.

This lecture will explain why the technology known as Neurofeedback is so

powerful and will reveal how it can help individuals create long term

changes.

===========================================================================

A SAMPLING OF CASES FROM THE CENTER FOR BRAIN TRAINING

Case 1: A 28 Year Old Who Couldn't Sleep

A 28 year old was brought to our center by his mother, a nurse. The mother

said her son hadn't been able to sleep a single night since the age of three

or four, without the use of medications. She had taken him to various

experts over the years. They gradually put him on a mix of medications

which allowed him to sleep. He was completely unable to sleep without the

use of medication. Nevertheless, he really didn't function well on

medications and would often over sleep, sleeping 10-12 hours a night. After

training with Neurofeedback once a week for approximately three months, he

went away on a trip. During the trip he realized he had forgotten his

medications and yet, to his surprise, he was still able to sleep. In

addition, his sleep was reduced to 8 hours instead of the usual 10 - 12

hours. Furthermore, he experienced increased alertness during the day and

greater clarity of mind. Neurofeedback helped him change a dysfunctional

sleep pattern into a more normal sleep pattern.

Case 2: A 7 Year Old with Meltdowns

A year ago, a mom brought her seven year old daughter to the Center for

Brain Training. Even though the daughter was on three medications for ADD,

she continued to suffer serious meltdowns several times a week. She would

lose control for up to an hour at a time. Her mother was very concerned

about the amount of medications she was taking, especially considering there

seemed to be little result. Additionally, there was a family history of

serious mental health problems. After training with Neurofeedback over

several months, her daughter learned to control her emotions. The mother

reports that her daughter is now doing very well in school, and rarely has

emotional outbursts. This little girl now describes how she is able to go

into her room whenever she is feeling agitated and can quiet herself on her

own. Prior to Neurofeedback, this was impossible.

Case 3: A Mom with Panic Attacks

A 35 year old mother with an active two year old came to our office because

of anxiety. She was having up to five panic attacks a day and felt that

they were taking over her life. She had been suffering from anxiety since

the age of 17. She also had been experiencing mild depression and was on an

antidepressant. She wanted to have another child and desired an alternative

to medications. She wanted to resolve the anxiety prior to becoming

pregnant. When she first started at the center, she had to talk herself

into coming because she felt so anxious. After 12 sessions, she no longer

had the anxiety or panic attacks and was able to reduce her medication by

half.

New Research Theorizes Link Between Autism And Toxic Chemicals

By Zulima Palacio, Voice of America. is.gd/buBmf

During the last decade the reported cases of

autism and other illnesses related to brain development have dramatically

increased not just in the U.S. but around the world. Scientists say the

increase cannot be explained by genetics and they believe it's linked to the

increase of toxic chemicals in the environment.

Dr. Martha Herbert is a pediatric neurologist at

Massachusetts General Hospital. She's directing a large research study on toxic

chemicals in the environment and their impact on brain development, including

autism. " The genes load the gun, " she said. " But the environment

pulls the trigger. "

For years, scientists have believed that autism

was genetically based.

But Dr. Herbert believes environmental factors

can either trigger or worsen the illness.

She says finding those elements early in life

and changing them could determine the severity of the disease. " We

have a system in the body called the detoxification system, detoxification is

another variant. In detoxification you get rid of things that you don't

want either your body's own waste products or things that get in which you

don't want to have around, " she said. " It can be air pollution, it

can be plastics in the food, it can be pesticides that are in so many of our

products. "

Dr. Herbert's research involves babies, school

age children and adults, with and without autism.

She is trying to find out how the brain becomes

autistic and at what point.

Vince, and Group

My questions to our state representatives and organizations like ADAPT would be

what are their interest? Meaning as a large group of individuals who have a

great deal of interest on the well being of our kids future. WHAT DOES THIS LAW

SAY? Good example I work for a rehab company outsourced in a Independent Living

Facility/Adult Living Facility for the elderly community. They as well have

there own services inside this community such as therapy and other services

which they bill medicare. NOW IS THIS DOUBLE DIPPING?

Like how the schools get paid for therapy services if

the child doesn't get services from outside school. Though they receive Mc Kay

money as well to provide your child the education they need???? GROUP!!!! Time

to wake up and smell the coffee. Your child is someones income. Maybe your

child is high functioning and they will be OK in the rat race when they become

an adult. MAYBE? Or the chances that any lower functioning children will have

to have an endless wait for living on their own, in a group home or community.

Have you seen the numbers of how many are on the wait list for med waiver

lately?

The fact is SUSAN, DENISE, and VEN..... I am waiting for when this state can

demonstrate " QUALITY OF LIFE " for my son. Actually all our kids. Not

only do I care for him but for all our kids and families out there. SO we

decided to close institutions to bring the disabled communities in the real

world. BUT like Mayor says there is no such thing as the real world. That

was a stupid show on MTV. Our kids need communities such as dale, Classic

Hyatt, and more.... These are elderly communities who need different levels of

needs met that aren't provided at home. These are far from being institutions.

They have very small memory units and dedicate more to the higher level. That's

what we need!!!!! Are you listening. I love my son and I am going to make sure

to strive for creating this from scratch if I need to.

aka enzo's mom

Even if Enzo doesn't get to live in a place like this because of his medical

issues. I am still doing it for all my families which I have met through out

the years. I am not the only one on here who wants a better life for their son

or daughter. Like the song by Mayor says " I like to think the best of

me is hiding up my sleeve " : )

This was sent to the listserv by a group called ADAPT. I have asked Ven

ADAPT would like to have this bill killed, most of us do not.

Help Kill This Bill: HB645C1

What it does

The bill creates “Planned Residential Communities†for people with

developmental disabilities and removes the 1000 ft. siting limit in FS

419. Communities must be sited on at least 10 acres with unified

control. The current limit prevents group homes from being closer

than 1000 ft apart unless approved by local government.

First of all, the addition of the acreage requirement was not in the original

bill. A legislator added this verbiage, not the proponents. Also, it has been

changed to 8 acres. That being said, I don't feel that there should be a limit

in size, but for the bill to proceed, it was understood that it had to be in

there. Furthermore, this bill does not change the 1,000 foot rule for group

homes in the community at large. It only addresses homes located within the

planned residential community itself.

Why is it important?

There is nothing in this bill that prevents planned communities from becoming

institutions or at best, housing projects for people with developmental

disabilities. Institutions have a very checkered record serving people

with developmental disabilities in this state and others. As a result,

the bill represents the most important shift in more than 30 years in terms of

how adults with disabilities are served in Florida and it represents a total

reversal of the mainstreaming of children with disabilities while they are in

public schools.

This is another inflammatory statement and is not based in fact. Most

institutions of the past were state run facilities. The intent of this bill is

to allow intentional communities to be created where individuals with

disabilities and their families choose to live there. I doubt many families

would choose what is described by Adapt. There is no intent to create

segregated institutions.

Why does this bill need to die?

1. This bill does not direct the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) to

license these communities in total. APD will only be able to license the

individual residences in the community. Since the bill does not prevent

sheltered workshops, medical and other services from being in these

communities, then there will be no way to oversee how the total “community†is

operating.

There is nothing that happens to or for individuals served by APD that is not

overseen in group homes, supported living or any of the other settings they

license. I am unclear how having a planned community will avoid scrutiny. As

for the sheltered workshop issue, I agree that sheltered workshops are not a

great option whether in or out of a community, but the existence of one, does

not in and of itself cause the community to be an institution. On the medical issue,

I am unclear what this has to do with being in a planned community or not.

Medical services in close proximity is a good thing.

2. This bill takes away local control over density and there is no requirement

that people without disabilities live in the communities.

To my knowledge, there is an amendment that has or will be added that addresses

this concern.

3. The backers of this bill want Medicaid Waiver funds from the Agency for

Persons with Disabilities to help pay for the ongoing care for the people with

disabilities that will reside in these communities but these funds are not

intended for institutions.

Again, this is inflammatory language and has no basis in fact. These

communities are not going to be institutions. The funds follow the individual

and if the individual wants to live in this type of community, are we to tell

them they cannot? Where is the choice in that?

4. The federal government has indicated they will stop paying for services to

people with disabilities in these types of communities which will likely put an

additional burden on local government and the state.

I would like to see the law, language or basis for this comment. Again, I think

this is merely a scare tactic and not based in fact.

5. There is no definition of what†unified control†means – it could mean a

neighborhood association or a single provider/administra tor such as you would

have in an institution.

This language was added by the same legislator that added the acreage

requirement. We had no control over that being added. Furthermore, if you are

creating a community, someone needs to be in charge, right? Not sure how that

automatically makes it an institution.

6. The provision requiring a 10 acre parcel effectively precludes having these

“communities†in urban areas - a form of red lining (e.g. discrimination) and

pushes these “communities†into more rural areas.

This is addressed above. It has been reduced to 8 acres and a legislator added

this language, not the proponents.

7. Staff Analysis states that HB645C1 will cut money for transportation because

of the one-stop-shop approach. We need multiple eyes to prevent abuse of the

most vulnerable citizens.

Not sure how this will cut funding for transportation? What does transportation

have to do with abuse? The fact is, there will be less need for transportation

for things that the individual may choose to do in the planned community.

Nothing precludes the individual from leaving the planned community to go

shopping, movies, the beach, the mall, work, bowling or any other activity.

What do you need to do today?

Call Representative Dave Murzin at and let him know that you

believe that 645 should not be put on the agenda.

Call Rep. lin Sands and Rep Bill Galvano and tell them to stop HB 645C1

from moving NOW.Do NOT email. We need to generate call volume.

You should know the facts and what the intent of this bill are and not get

caught up in the scare tactics listed here. The proponents of the bill are

parents that have children with developmental disabilities and they want an

option for their child that is readily available to all non-disabled

members of society. Nobody is going to force anyone to live in a

planned residential community, it is a choice.

Visit

..org/ or

m.org/ and after looking at these intentional communities, if you feel

they are institutions, then make your calls to oppose the bill. But, if after

looking at these sites, you see what we see and realize how wonderful a planned

community can be, then call and tell them you want it to be heard and to pass

the bill.
