According to these experts, limited availability of tissue from individuals on the autism spectrum is hampering research, because without actual tissue it is difficult to determine the basic biological defects responsible for this disorder. This need has prompted ARI to enter into a partnership with the Brain and Tissue Bank for Developmental Disorders at the University of land, under contract to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), to support tissue donations. Anyone, regardless of age, is invited to register as a tissue donor. The tissue bank is as much in need of control tissue as tissue from those with autism. Tissue must be recovered within 24 hours, because after this time the tissue has lost most of its usefulness for research purposes. Therefore, advance registration is important in that it enables the intricate process of tissue recovery to occur in a timely manner. Even if a person is not registered in advance, tissue donation may still be possible by calling the toll free number below. To register: call 1- or 1- (from outside the continental U.S.) to request a packet or discuss any questions or concerns relating to tissue donation. We also encourage family members to visit website: btbankfamily.org and researchers to visit btbank.org. ______________________________________________________ ‘Safe and Sound’ Preconference Workshop in Dallas The Autism Society (AS), in partnership with ARI, is pleased to offer a preconference session free to all law enforcement, first response professionals, attorneys in criminal justice, and ER professionals. Forty percent of the sale of artwork, jewelry, apparel, and note cards is earmarked to support autism research. All three exhibits end on July 4. Edgeware Gallery Bids Farewell to Dennis Hopper, legendary actor and counter-culture giant who passed away last weekend (May 30). Hopper, who grew up in San Diego, is best known for directing and starring in the trailblazing film, Easy Rider, and over 100 Hollywood films. He was also a player in the art community–as an artist, photographer and collector. Part of the tribute to Dennis Hopper includes the showing of his ‘screen test’ filmed by Andy Warhol in 1965. The artwork on display includes images of Hopper, embedded in tile, by local artist Starkow. Subject matter for the tiles ranges from the actor’s appearance at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre as a teenager in the 1950s, to a 1975 mug shot. In addition to the tiles, viewers can see a life-size mask face, molded from Hopper’s face. Edgeware Gallery Salutes Veterans with ‘Fighting for Freedom,’ which opened over Memorial Day weekend and is the second in a series of the gallery’s Art & Artifacts series. Authentic artifacts in this show include: Colonial paper currency, printed in 1776, a bullet that was shot during the battle at Gettysburg in July 1863, a piece of brick from the foundation of Abraham Lincoln's home in Springfield, Illinois; wood and copper pieces from the battleship, the USS Constitution (‘Old Ironsides’), and much more. Edgeware Gallery Celebrates Jazz Music, from our 'Art Inspired By Jazz' art show. In this exhibit, which opened last month, talented local artists contribute an assortment of affordable pieces honoring jazz personalities and the music they make. ______________________________________________________ Wedding Bells Last weekend, ARI director, Dr. Steve Edelson, married Dr. Paradiz in Denver, Colorado. Both Dr. Edelson and Paradiz are very active in the field of autism. Dr. Edelson has been conducting research for over 30 years in the areas of sensory interventions, biomedical treatment, and behavioral problems. Dr. Paradiz has been involved in the educational fields for nearly 25 years, as a university professor, program founder in autism education, and more recently in innovative curricula specific to advancing the autonomy of individuals on the spectrum and those who support them.
