Guest guest
Hi all. Has anyone tried the oxytocin nasal spray on their kids? Any success?
Guest guest
Having been given oxytocin when in labor, I'd be very cautious in applying it for what sounds like quackish science. It made me utterly miserable. Hormone therapy/steroids are very dangerous drugs and NOT natural therapies. Hi all. Has anyone tried the oxytocin nasal spray on their kids? Guest guest
It's become commonplace to give it to speed along almost every birth, unless you take control of your birth and refuse, or have a home birth with a midwife. Guest guest
A retrospective study done showed that moms who were given oxytocin during the delivery had a higher incidence of autistic kids. That may not mean anything about oxytocin. For instance, it could mean that oxytocin usage at a critical time is one cause of autism, or it could mean that a difficult delivery, which would necessitate oxytocin, might be a cause of autism, or it could mean that children with the genetics of autism do not put out the " I am ready to be born " signal and therefore cause the need for oxytocin, or it could mean that our kids, who are known to have a larger skull circumference in infancy and childhood, have a harder mechanical time of getting out and need a nudge, or it could be none of the above. I do agree with caution about new therapies. Hormones are powerful, poorly understood and have unknown longterm sequellae. Heck, they are still debating the best known of them, post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy. It helps, it doesn't, it's useless, but maybe not for some stuff, it's dangerous, but may be protective, back and forth. Much less is known about oxytocin and melatonin. Yes, melatonin is a hormone too. All the suspicion in this thread about oxytocin, and yet not for melatonin. Both poorly understood hormones. It wasn't that long ago that it was taught in medical school that the pineal gland, where melatonin is made, was a vestigial (useless) organ. Oxytocin at least, is from the pituitary, the Master Gland. We have known about it for a while. Note: not the same as understanding. Natural hormones to replace a deficiency state are indeed natural therapies. Oxytocin is a natural hormone. Pitocin, used for augmenting labor, is a synthetic version. Giving someone who is deficient in a hormone its replacement is physiologic and probably necessary. Indeed, unless you give someone with 's disease cortisol, they will die. Same with diabetes and insulin, hypothyroidism and thyroid hormone, etc. Even less critical losses, like adrenal insufficiency, borderline thyroid disease, testosterone deficiency, etc, the patients will not be well unless they are supplemented to normal levels. Giving someone who is not deficient either the natural hormone or a synthetic for mega dosing is not physiologic. Athletes who are " doping " are not deficient. They are using mega doses and pay the consequences. Synthetic versions of hormones are not the same as natural versions and can have untoward consequences. Just like synthetic vitamins (folic acid instead of folinic or tetrahydrofolates for instance) and synthetic foods (aspartame, hydrogenated oils, GMO's) have consequences. > > There are theories that oxytocin given during delivery, may increase > the chance of having an autistic child. > > Sara > > > > Hi all.
