Hi,

Behavior analysis consists of 3 major branches: Behaviorism is the philosophy of

the science of behavior, basic research is the province of the experimental

analysis of behavior, and developing a technology for improving behavior is the

concern of ABA (, Heron, Heward). The BCBA board is an international body

that certifies those who want to offer the services. The training and

certification targets areas such as selecting, defining and measuring target

behaviors, evaluating and analyzing behavior change, reinforcement, punishment,

antecedents, developing new behaviors, funtional analysis, ethics and so on. I

am reading this straight from the ABA text book used at colleges that provide

approved ABA training/certification.

So, ABA can be used to help people, young and old, with or without disabilities,

change their behavior. ABA can " improve socially significant behavior " , says

the book. Many psychologists and educator have contributed to this science, such

as Skinner (operant behavior, reinforcement) and (a stimulus triggers a

response) .

The main principles of ABA are used in every classroom every day all around the

world. The principles of reinforcement, for examples, are used by parents all

day long. In a clinical setting, ABA is used is a specific and systematic way,

but the main idea is the same: Changing behavior.

In Broward, the STAR curriculum which is used for students learning pre-academic

skills, utilizes ABA strategies and techniques. It is, however, very limited, and

cluster teachers say they need more instruction. Hopefully, autism coaches and

teachers will be able to be certified ( BCBA) so more students can learn through

this method of teaching. This is something our Area Behavior Specialists could

be helping the cluster staff with. It should not be impossible to do. Let's keep

pushing this issue. After all, ABA has proven to be very successful with our

population and they spend a lot of their time at school.

Liz
