Guest guest
***Sounds like another person who just doesn't get it - our kids don't learn social skills by being thrown into a group of NT kids, and group sports are a terrible choice for a child with motor skill problems as well as an inability to understand the social rules.***> actaully I thought he did know about AS. it is not jsut to ANY group, in his school, he has groups that are not too big , are not competitive, and are acustomed to integrating kids with disabilities. it is part of his mission.... so I am willing ot try. > the OT evaluator said she thinks he is an admirable kid with all his achievements so far, and that mommy needs emotional guidance- <<<<<<***Did she SAY that??? She said you need emotional guidance? Is she implying that you are the problem here??? Did she call you " mommy?!!!>> well, she called me mom........ it was bad enough though. the worst is that she did not mean to put me down or to blameme, but she si not even awre she did....... ><<< then the PT evaluator said It is clear that this kid has been " very very invested and it shows " (clap clap) ***What did he mean by that? That you had invested a lot of effort into him?***>>>> yes, that it shows that he has been treated extensively and given all the opprtunities to florish. I wrote " clap calp " in sarcasm because I am not sure teh undheard part of the sentenec was " within the limits of his disability. " but later he did say that he belives we need to remember he has AS but in a way put AS aside and trat him as much as NT as we can... <<<<<Well, give it a shot. My son Braden has been taking karate for two years........ But the karate influence hasn't worn off into his other areas of life. > that would be my indicator if it was workng for him as a therapy. for ex, I can see how M carries wha he learns with the horses to othe areas. he is more attentive to things that are subtle in the orse (like a minimal move of he ear that has certain meaning for his workwith the horse) and noticed he is payihjg more attention to people's expressions (not understanding many of them yet....). We talked about trying Jim in Karate or some other type of martial art. but hesitated since he tends to become violent at home when out of control. I'd be interested in hearing how this type of training affect any of the AS kids who have tried it. Thanks. Kathy H in Indiana
Guest guest
Kathy, All three of my sons did Tae Kwon Do. my aspie 16 y/o is a red belt, Josh 15 ADHD is black belt and 12, depressive disorder is brown. Their instructors taught them to never use their skill outside the school unless their lives were in danger. Using their skill on each other or their friends would result in the loss of their belts. Nothing worse could happen to them, them to have their belt stripped off of them in front of everybody and hung up in the school for all to see. I have been very lucky, they listened. Now my 4 /o daughter is another story. She puts on the sparring gear and seeks her brothers out to fight with them! No sweet little Miss, a real tuffy. She learned how to count in Korean before she learned it in English lol. She attended all lessons with us from six months of age on. When she was two she started the moves at home with them, at three she attended a tiny tots class. It was a lot of fun watching them! It truly made a difference in my kids life, and I highly recommend it. Barb " K.
