Guest guest
Hi Fania, I'm all for letting our kids have a life and not wearing the whole family out with endless rounds of therapy. I do think our kids often need extra support, though. For instance, maybe Mattan might need so extra help working on Judo moves. (I couldn't tell if they thought you should put him in a solo or group class.) If so, just putting him in a class that progresses too quickly for him might have a bad impact on his self-esteem. I do like the comment about he should be in an activity where M. feels good about how he's doing. I'm glad that you found some evaluators that seemed to understand M. Cynical me, I always distrust recommendations for no therapy when the evaluator might actually have to pay for it if needed. But, you were the one in the meeting and you live with M., so you know what is best. Certainly the accomodations they recommended seem very reasonable. I'm not clear where you are on the decision on where M. goes to school next. It does sound like at least this group would work with you. I'm glad something positive happened for you and M. Here's hoping more does.
Guest guest
> well we finished the OT eval and it was decided M does not need OT. they concluded his difficulty writing is neurological based and that in school they should not insist that he copies from the board or writes dictations etc. no insistence on homework, he is to be let to answer the questions by heart. He should be encouraged by all means to write, but not forced to. no need for OT sessions. YEAH !! *** Yes, when the writing difficulties are neurologically based, there is little you can do. had OT for his handwriting and as far as I can see, it accomplished nothing.*** > then we finished the PT eval. he said he is hypotonic alright, but so what? he said :some people are faster, some are slower, some are stronger , some are weaker, some are a little hypotonic. as long as he can do what kids are supposed to do in a fashion that satisfies HIM, as long as he is active and does not refrain from physical activities outside, then why place on his shoulders more therapies????? so his verdict was: no PT sessions, he said we should let these children have a life! a kid's Life ! YEAH !!!!! > I looked at them in disbelief. he said: send him to some sports IN A GROUP. what these AS kids need is to meet NT kids and learn from experience with NT kids! ***Sounds like another person who just doesn't get it - our kids don't learn social skills by being thrown into a group of NT kids, and group sports are a terrible choice for a child with motor skill problems as well as an inability to understand the social rules.*** > I said: " yeah, nice talking. every activity like that that we tried, he was expelled within the very first session due to " immaturity/ misbehaving/ incapable physically etc. " > the OT evaluator said she thinks he is an admirable kid with all his achievements so far, and that mommy needs emotional guidance- ***Did she SAY that??? She said you need emotional guidance? Is she implying that you are the problem here??? Did she call you " mommy?!!! I coughed, and in tears (what does a borg do when tears well up? melt!) I said, " with all respect due, this mommy can give guidance to all your therapists. now give me some emotional support that does not cost $250 an hour- that yes, I will take with both hands, since I have been fighting this all alone " ***Good for you!!!!!!*** > then the PT evaluator said It is clear that this kid has been " very very invested and it shows " (clap clap) ***What did he mean by that? That you had invested a lot of effort into him?*** > I said: " find me a group like that that will undertake the challenge and not give up and I will enroll him tomorrow morning. he said: " he needs JUDO and he needs a teacher that is an educator as well as a coach! " > I almost yelled: " find me one !! " and he said : " I am one! " so finally, I got out of there with a phone number for a judo instructor. ...... Mattan is extremely pleased, but lets first see if he understands the meaning of " not quitting for 2 years " which this PT person thinks is the length of time needed to really teach self restrain..... > what do you all think? > Right now I am just happy to NOT have to drag himt o more therapies....... > F Well, give it a shot. My son Braden has been taking karate for two years. While he complains about it and threatens to quit occasionally, he still keeps going and is well behaved there. He has certainly improved at karate over the two years he's been there. But the karate influence hasn't worn off into his other areas of life. Nevertheless, I think that judo is a great idea of M if it interests him. Kathy
Guest guest
> > that would be my indicator if it was workng for him as a therapy. for ex, I can see how M carries wha he learns with the horses to othe areas. he is more attentive to things that are subtle in the orse (like a minimal move of he ear that has certain meaning for his workwith the horse) and noticed he is payihjg more attention to people's expressions (not understanding many of them yet....). > F Fania, This man's judo class sounds perfect. If he actually has special groups for special needs kids and he knows how to teach them, this could be wonderful. I was referring to putting our kids in group sports with NT kids and parent coaches. In Braden's case, karate is the only thing he has ever stuck with, so that alone is a positive thing for him. This karate school is not designed for special needs kids, but it is very positive in its approach, the kids advance at regular intervals regardless of skill (effort is all that matters) and they do emphasize lots of good values. But so do I, for that matter...it hasn't stopped Braden's " moments. " However, I think that Braden has internalized more positive values than he is showing at the moment! Oh the joys of approaching adolescents. LOL! Kathy Kathy

Guest guest
> We talked about trying Jim in Karate or some other type of martial art. but > hesitated since he tends to become violent at home when out of control. I'd > be interested in hearing how this type of training affect any of the AS kids > who have tried it. > That was my concern. My ds has low muscle tone. And is very small for his age. But he has anger issues. I'd like for him to gain strength. And learn self defense. Etc. But do I teach him something that might further enable him? He hits now in anger. He has never come close to hurting anyone though. This might be a detriment. a

Guest guest
Hooray!!! How wonderful to have this tidbit of really GOOD news!! Thank you so very much for sharing this with us!! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!! ~~Ruth From: no-forced-vaccination [mailto:no-forced-vaccination ] On Behalf Of mariposahealing Sent: Friday, September 25, 2009 5:10 AM no-forced-vaccination Subject: Something POSITIVE I live in Western North Carolina and have something I feel is very positive that I would like to share! Yesterday morning, shortly after dropping my children off at school I heard something on the local radio station. Now I do not normally listen to the radio stations because there is always more talk than music and it drives me crazy while trying to drive. Anyways, to the point! The DJ announcer was talking about how it is flu season and everyone is going and getting their flu shots like regular every flu season. But that there is this new flu shot the H1N1-5 something, something that is about to come out. He had gotten on the WHO (World Health Organization) website and was ready about this new vaccine and he is not to sure about this one. He does not know and is not to comfortable about what he was reading. That children under 10 had to have 2 shots. That this is probably not something he should be sharing but that it was bothering him and is not sure at this time whether he want to get this one. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had goose bumps!!! I was cheering and screaming in my vehicle upon hearing this. I was SO happy! Here was someone on public radio that had just spoken up regarding the H1N1 vaccine and how he was questioning it. He has planted the seed of doubt and raise question in listeners minds. Maybe more people will wake up after hearing this and go " hey, if so and so on the radio station is not sure about this what does he know that I do not? " and start to educate themselves. Power to this announcer! I am going to call the radio station today and tell them I am so grateful he shared that and there are millions of people across the planet that do not want and will refuse this vaccine!!!! YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
