Pam,

This is exactly what my gyn told me at Cleveland Clinic. That he didn't

think I needed to deal with more hormones when my were so out of wack.

Oh, have to go our mare is in heat. Sorry she only comes in heat once a

year.

It is me again. I just wanted to clarify that I would be starting on the

pill and not yet on birth control. I am 28 years old and was diagnosed with

GD a year ago. I am currently taking 7mg of Tap daily.

Thanks again!

We had this discussion a few months ago, and I think there's even a poll on

it. I don't think we really came up with a good answer. I've thought

seriously about stopping taking them, but I haven't yet. My theory has

always been, though, that it keeps your hormone levels more consistent, and

that would have a good effect. Estrogen has a really big impact on the

thyroid function. I just don't know the answer. I'd love to get a

definitive one.

I asked one of the Drs at Bastyr about this... and she said she definitely

did NOT recommend that I go back on the pill, that my with my hormones out

of wack with the thyroid thing, she didn't think my body needed to deal with

artificial hormones as well... I didn't go into more detail than that with

her, because that was my gut feeling about the pill at this stage anyway.

But who knows, everyone seems so different with this disease, maybe it's

good for some and not so good for others?

There was a discussion awhile back about maybe the pill not being so

effective when also on ATDs... or something to that affect, sorry, don't

remember exactly.

Well, I'd say that's something we need to pay attention to. No reason to

stay on it if there's any chance it will make things worse!

I had a negative experience with birth control pills. I had been on

them since I was 17 and when I was 22 or 23 started having problems

finding one that didn't give me unpleasant side effects. I was heavy

and sluggish, despite working out a ton and drastically changing my

diet. I was grouchy and tired ALL the time - just a mostly miserable

person. After I made a concerted effort to lose weight without

success, I decided to nix the pills, thinking they were the problem.

After quitting the pills, I lost 7 pounds in a week and felt

wonderful immediately. Energy returned, libido returned, everything

was great. (In looking back, I can see that those were my very first

GD signs)

My theory is that the hormonal mix in the pills was putting me in a

hypo type of state, and I felt so so much better after quitting the

pills (feeling energetic and quite well with what were very mild

Graves symptoms).

After 9 months or so, I started having problems with my cycle and the

doctors said the only thing I could do was go back on the pill. I

tried and was miserable after only taking them a month, so I quit

again.

I was diagnosed with Graves " officially " 3 years after quitting the

pill as my symptoms had slowly worsened. I now use an IUD for birth

control and have been happy with that. Newest problem is that I

bleed all the time, which the docs blame on the IUD and now they want

to take it out. I opted for tryng a progestin only " mini pill " to

see if that would help me get some balance back. Am having symptoms

(bloating, swollen, tender breasts and negative moods) after taking

that <2 weeks. Still bleeding (lucky me...this has gone on since

last July...so much for Graves decreasing bleeding!) so maybe I'll

have to have the IUD removed after all.

I know this is a lot of extra information, but wanted to let you in

on my experience. I think my " ideal " hormonal balance must be in a

pretty small range and have found that the pills throw me off a lot -

I really don't like what they do to me. and I'm sure it doesn't help

b/c the Graves causes enough hormonal imbalance to start with.

You could always try them for a few months and see how your own body

reacts. I'll bet you'll know right away if they're right for you.

Hope you have better luck than me in finding a suitable method of

birth control!

My endo put me on birth control for a month to try to make me have a cycle so

she must think that being on the two is a problem. I didn't ask her

specifically though.
