Based on the discussion we’ve had on here in the past

few days regarding journaling I started yesterday (using OneNote – thanks

Gillian).

I just wanted to post what I put down yesterday both as an

example and also for your feedback. I’m interested in what you all have

to say.

* Patty is my wife, Abby is my almost 3-yearold daughter

11:00AM - ate a peanut butter and jelly

sandwich. Was the first time I'd been hungry today even though up since 8.

Also had a banana. Was neither particularly full nor overly hungry after I

ate.

2:00PM - started to feel really hungry

enough for lunch. Had roasted a bunch of eggplant earlier in the day. Made a

sandwich of eggplant slices, tomato slices and swiss cheese. Was very

satisfying on a lot of levels but next time the eggplant needs LESS SALT.

5:00PM - grabbed a 3.5oz pack of pretzels

as a snack before my father-in-law's birthday party. Was very hungry. Didn't

really want to eat the whole bag but I ended up doing so. Too hungry and too

tasty.

6:15PM - dinner at the party was a pasta

dish with shrimp. It was very good. Had a portion and then

allowed Patty to bring me seconds as it was

good enough to want more.

7:00PM - " better than sex " cake

served. While I strongly disagree with the name it was pretty tasty. No

desire for a second piece.

11:00PM - felt hungry enough that I had to

eat something plus needed to take my " dinner " meds which I

didn’t take at my in-laws' house. Had an orange and a bowl of Sun Chips.

How did it make you feel to write it all down? If you feel better

doing it, then go for it.

As an aside, roasted eggplant is so good! I just sprinkle mine with

olive oil and don't salt it, as I have to keep my sodium intake down.

Just had to mention that--my apologies if actual food talk is

off-limits.

Far from off limits, food talk is welcomed!

Some months back we all wrote our least and most favorite foods. A fun exercise!

It didn’t feel good or bad. I didn’t write down how much I

had. I didn’t do it judgmentally. I did want to keep some notes not just

about what I ate but why so I could see it in context and could share that with

my dietitian.

Really – no salt on eggplant? I was always told you had to salt

it to get the bitterness out.

hi ,thank you for sharing your journal.it seems like you have a good awareness of what you're feeling in the moment, deciding what to eat, interpreting your hunger and fullness signals, as well as when you felt really satisfied versus not so much.from my perspective that's very impressive. i still do a lot of restricting; i eat a lot of the same "safe" foods and usually at the same time each day and i keep hunger feelings at bay with lots of decaf coffee thru the day.i think you're doing great!thanks again, jenniferSubject: food journalTo:

I agree, it sounds like you are doing a great job at listening to your body and

honoring your hunger! I wonder if you would consider adding a bit more insight

into your emotions in your entries. For instance, how did you feel after you had

a second helping of the pasta? Or after the pretzels? You mentioned that you

didn't intend to eat the whole bag, but did because of how hungry you were

(which is a great, because you listened to what your body needed!)... but were

you ok with it afterwards, or did you have any anxiety?

I don't ask for my own curiosity, but mostly because I find that the emotional

aspects of eating are really what cause me to restrict or binge, so recording

how I feel helps when I look back at what made me behave in those behaviors or

not. But, everyone is different!

OK, great!  Well, I am going to have roasted eggplant, cauliflower,

potato, onion, and tofu for dinner tomorrow--unless, of course, it no

longer sounds good by then.  And brussels sprouts tonight.  No one else

in my family will eat them, but I love them.

As an aside, roasted eggplant is so good!  I just sprinkle mine with

olive oil and don't salt it, as I have to keep my sodium intake down.

Just had to mention that--my apologies if actual food talk is

If it didn't feel bad, then it must have been OK.

I've never salted eggplant. If it's bitter, the taste doesn't bother

me.

Really – no salt on

eggplant? I was always told you had to salt

it to get the bitterness out.

Patty is my wife, Abby is my almost 3-yearold daughter

11:00AM - ate a peanut butter and

jelly

sandwich. Was the first time I'd been hungry today even though up

since

8. Also had a banana. Was neither particularly full nor overly

hungry after I ate.

2:00PM - started to feel really

hungry enough

for lunch. Had roasted a bunch of eggplant earlier in the day. Made

a sandwich of eggplant slices, tomato slices and swiss cheese. Was

very

satisfying on a lot of levels but next time the eggplant needs LESS

SALT.

5:00PM - grabbed a 3.5oz pack of

pretzels as a snack before my father-in-law's birthday party.

Was

very hungry. Didn't really want to eat the whole bag but I ended up

doing

so. Too hungry and too tasty.

6:15PM - dinner at the party was

a pasta dish

with shrimp. It was very good. Had a portion and then

allowed Patty to bring me seconds

as it was

good enough to want more.

7:00PM - "better than sex" cake

served. While I strongly disagree with the name it was pretty

tasty. No desire for a second piece.

11:00PM - felt hungry enough that

I had to eat

something plus needed to take my "dinner" meds which I didn’t take at

my in-laws' house. Had an orange and a bowl of Sun Chips.

Thank you for sharing your journal with us, I am very impressed with how this must have helped raise your awareness about associating your feelings with your food (desire for and fullness afterward)...

I am sold on this and am going to poke around for a nice notebook I can keep with me...

Thanks again...
